I bought a new LCD 32" 720 Samsung TV. And I have to use my old DVD player that works fine, better than usual TV programs but worse than HD quality. I would like to buy a HD DVD player.
What should I buy - HD DVD player or upconversion DVD palyer?
Do I need special HD DVD discs to watch movies on HD DVD player or I can still watch my old DVD movies ??

Thanks for your help guys !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buy the HD-DVD player. All of the HD-DVD players I know also are upconverting players, including all made by Toshiba (pretty much the only HD-DVD players available). You get the benefits of HD, plus upconversion. Note, to use upconversion (on any upconverting player), you need to have an HDMI cable hooked up from your player to your TV. A good place to buy a cheap quality HDMI cable is monoprice.com

An HD-DVD player will play both HD-DVD discs and regular DVDs. So you can watch all your old DVDs, plus any HD-DVDs you get.

I suggest keeping your old regular DVD Player until LG and Samsung both release an HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Combo player which (as the name suggests) can play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs on one machine, and hopefully by that time more software will be available. Upgrading to an up convert will not make much difference to you because a regular DVD is still in its original resolution no matter what you do to it. You will just be adding more artifacts to you picture. All good things happen to whom who wait!! Wait a few months and you will have a more satisfying viewing experience.

For now I would recommend an upconversion. It seems like Blu-ray is edging out HD-DVD. Plus good upconverters are less than $100. Wait and see who will win this new format war. Plus Blu-rays & HD-DVD players are getting cheaper.
You can play regular DVD's on a HD-DVD player.

FIRST....GET the HD-DVD player like the Toshiba HDA2...it's gotten great reviews on HD DVDs >>AND<< it makes Normal DVDs look good too.....

That's what they've been saying.....

And do not.....I repeat DO NOT waste your money on an Upconverting DVD player....It only does the old DVDs and not the NEW HD DVDs.....

On a 32" you won't see any difference. Maybe if you watch from 2' away but from a normal viewing distance it just isn't worth the upgrade. Now, if you said you had something 50" or bigger go for it. You will definitly see HD quality.

I don't suggest buying a HD player until the format war is over and the prices drop. You could end up with the losing format and a pile of expensive obsolete equipment and movies.

Get yourself a quality upconverter such as an Oppo http://www.oppodigital.com/dv981hd/dv981hd_features.html, sit back and enjoy yourself for a lot less money.

the first guy had the best answer . id go with hddvd i have one and the quality is excelent. also i dont like sony. they are very greedy. and also to every body out there this is not the 70s there is enough room for both formats in this marketplace. no one will win i predict . there will always be both. there enough customers for both. and plus some manufacturers are making hddvd and blu ray players in one.
