Muslims don't actually pray towards Mecca itself, they pray towards the Kabbah, a big black stone in the center of Mecca. So if they are in Mecca, they still pray in the direction of the Kabbah.

Towards the shrine in the City? I think they go there and walk around it? I see films of it but don't think I would ever be aloud to see it because I am a Christian.

They pick a spot to stand and spin themselves into the ground so they can be sure the have faced the right direction. I hear that's how oil was first discovered there.
