Your dog will need to like all people old and young, it also can not be afraid of objects such as wheelchairs, walkers or canes. The dog should be confident, calm and not easily excitable or uncontrollable. The dog should know basic commands and should ALWAYS be willing to listen to you and in your control under all circumstances. The dog would have to be able to leave food when you tell him.
You can take the CGC at the same time you take the TDI because the test is comprised of the CGC and there are a few additional exercises that you would have to complete in order to pass the TDI. There are some training groups that offer training for the TDI test and you do not have to take the test til you feel you and your dog are ready, even if you do not pass the first time you can take it again. Here is a link for both TDI and Delta Society:

Go to the Therapy Dog International web site and look up testings in your area..
You need to have a dog that is very obedient and well socialized and it is also best to have one that has already passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen test as well. Once this is accomplished then you need to get your dog tested and if he passes then you become certified.

You can NOT take the CGC test OR get CGC certification at the same time as the TDI test (or any other therapy test) even though the tests do have all or part of the CGC test in them. Therapy dog testing and CGC testing are two totally seperate things and are from two totally different organizations.

You have to pass a test adminstered by TDI (Therapy Dogs International) or Delta (The Delta Society). It will help you to take a class specifically designed for the test, but you don't absolutely have to. You absolutely have to buy a home-study book from the society and complete the exercises and mail some things in. Then you take the test! There is probably a therapy dog group in your area that can help you. Try finding them through your area kennel club.
