The relatively recent abundence of free time in human life (in terms of the present back through cave man times) has a dual and seemingly paradoxical effect on us as individuals and as a society. As humans are given more free time (due in large part to mechanization of our society), we also have more free time to contemplate the how and why of our existence. Often these Q's lead people to an answer in God. Does anyone else find it ironic that many of our scientific endeavors lead us to this sort of contemplation? Should this ultimate outcome make for an advocation or a denouncement of technology?

No, because one can have free time without industrialization.

Furthermore, there's an argument that industrialization has lead to MORE work. If I remember correctly, the argument was that even though we can do the same amount of work in less time, the standard of what's considered socially acceptable has risen to the point that it's become impossible to maintain without working more hours than before.

That is true, very true. However, if i may bring out an arguement. even not having any free time will bring you into contemplating about god, only you gonna see god in work, or whatever activity you are doing. I do agree however, that passive mind creates abberations like God etc...and human society is degrading in this way..

Every culture throughout history has had a belief in one god or another. This is WITHOUT regard to industrialization or the lack of it. Having to work 17 hours a day to provide for yourself and/or your family has NOT prevented anyone from seeking answers to the unknown and postulating a god or gods to answer those questions.

Your entire premise therefore is inoperable.

When I have free time, I drink a lot. Then I contemplate why I have to pee so much. I guess that is science, in a way.
