My friend was at his brother's home and he suffered a slight stroke, so he stayed at the hospital for 7 days. He was only 21 years old. About 11 months later, he suffered a massive stroke and was totally paralyzed for another 5 months, and succumbed to pneumonia. No evidence of strokes was in his family, so that seems odd.

Was he premature? I heard that premature babies are prone to early life strokes.

It is not normal to have a stroke at a young age but it does happen.

Some people have hemorrhagic strokes at young ages and these can be very devistating. The numbers are very small. Other people can have strokes because of clotting disorders in their blood that usually are not identified until an event occurs. Occasionally a hole in the heart can be the culprit and the initial presentation may be a stroke (these are usually not as devastating).

Normal: Age has nothing 2 do with anyone having a stroke. a 5year old could have a stroke. Yes it does seem odd, but it is true. Family history is always checked, but we can always b the first in our family 2 suffer a illness.I wish him well!

Strokes and heart attacks can happen at any age. Also just because there is no family history of strokes doesn't mean it can't happen to you. 21 is rather young but not unheard of. I am surprised they didn't have him on meds to try to prevent another stroke after he had the first one.

Strokes can be caused by a number of things that are not necessarily in the family.

High blood pressure and aneurysm are two such causes.

Some drugs also can cause stroke. Anabolic steroids and some street drugs can also.

9 times out of 10 the only reason some one of that age would have a stroke is if they have a case of hyper tension and they take a pain reliever with amphetamines in it.

Yes that is extremely rare at his age. There must be some congenital deformity to cause that - such as really small veins or weak spots in normal ones.

It can occur at any age. There was most likely an underlying cause. A perfectly healthily person would not have this happen old or young.
