I believe all states allow for hunting with Semi Auto Shotguns. (I love by Browning Sweet 16). However Rifle areas are limited to certian areas in some states, due to population. When you go to get your licinse this year, you should pick up you states, guide to hunting and fishing. This guide should tell you in what areas of your state it is ok to use a rifle to hunt with. however you should not encounter a problem with it being Semi-Auto

All states allow hunting with semi-automatic weapons. However, some states/areas restrict you to shotgun only during deer season. If you live in a state that allows semi-automatic rifles, the M1 is fine. More often than not, your ammunition is regulated. For example in my home state, Ball ammunition is illegal. Some M1 ammunition is ball ammunition. In this case, the ammunition would be illegal, but the gun would not be. make sure the ammunition you are using is legal.

As far as I know all states that allow any rifles allow semis. I know Virginia allows semis, but I still use a bolt action because I plan to only shoot a deer one time. No sense wasting bullets or meat.

I can't think of any state that doesn't allow autos for hunting. The caliber and ammo is more important than the weapon design.
