If they were baptised in the Cahtolic Church, you were not required to sign anything because you are not their Godmother . Technically, you are a Christian Witness.

Godmother is fine for familial use, it just isn't accurate.

Hopefully, the Godfather was Catholic.

If not, the children do not have valid godparents at all.

you don't need to be Catholic and you don't sign anything - this is true. your name IS on their baptismal certificate and registered with their church. the parents probably saw you as a good choice due to your ties of strong friendship. if they weren't your friend they would not have trust in your decisions.
you don't need to attend their confirmations or anything else, but as a person who the parents wanted involved in their childrens lives, i'm surprised they didn't invite you to the ceremony. godparents are no longer the automatic choice to care for the children as in the old days. in fact, should the parents meet an untimely death, you would not even be considered unless there was a will writen with that as the directive.

When a child is baptized, you choose 2 people, 1-male, 1-female, as godparents. One of them needs to be Catholic, and I would think the other needs to be at least Christian.

Your friend chose you because you are important to them, so take it as a compliment. Unfortunately most God parents do not play a big role in making sure the child does or does not follow Catholicism; today it is more of a technicality, which is really a shame.

Only one of the God parents need to be Catholic. The other one is considered a Christian witness.

To many, if not most, it is more of a ceremonial position. We tend to pick friends and relatives, some of who are faithful church goers and some who are not.

Be glad they want to share such an important part of their child's life with you.

ADDED
You do not need to sign anything so do not worry.

And French or English (or any other language) does not matter. God understands regardless what language we speak.

If the children were Christened in the Catholic Church, then at the time of stand up for them as godmother, the parish priest would have required you to sign a statement that you agree to bring up the girls in the Catholic faith, should anything happen to the parents.

If you didn't have to agree to that, then I guess the Catholic Church just doesn't care about it any more.

Many Catholics are hooked on TRADITIONS OF MAN. They dont follow Jesus but the religion. What are you, then? Going to church or not going to church doesnt say you are a believer of Christ. being baptised as a baby doesnt get you saved. I am not a Catholic, my children dont have godparents. I have a sis and a brother, parents and good friends who can do that job of taking care of the kids in an emergency. The kids both know about Jesus and their foundations are built on the Rock of Jesus Christ. God will be with them even if they are under the care of non-believers. Each person is not covered by their religion but their own personal faith and walk in Jesus. They both have a bible and Christian mentors for good instruction and encouragement and we will be reunited in heaven if they chose Jesus as their Savior.

If you think that's strange, I am an atheist godparent to two Episcopalian (i.e. Catholic lite) children. And the kid's parents knew I am an atheist.

I think the title is more symbolic and an honor nowadays.

Your friends accept you for who you are and feel that you could be depended upon to always do the best thing for their children.

Well, maybe their not that religious and if they are maybe they just think you would be the best person to raise their daughters if something happened religious or not.

Because most Christian religions believe in basically the same thing. And other religons believe in God but use different names. and they have different customes. But still believe in thou shall not kill and so forth.
