seems to me that your file is either corrupted or not a true mpeg file that Windows recognizes

most digital camera produce a modified mpeg files, but the software bundled with the camera can correct that. even if the camera can be pluged as a usb device.

I was trying a similar thing with a sony 30gb hdd cam coder. the one who records directly to a built in hard drive. when I plug it in I could see the camera as a removable drive and can copy the mpeg files directly but windows movie maker can't recognize it. when I import it through the camera bundled program it gives me almost the same file with the same name and extension and size. and it takes the same time as it was copied directly, but this times it just works fine.

the same goes for jpegs from my old nokia phone. it appears black when copied straight from the camera but appears fine when it goes though the phone desktop software.

the reason I belive is related t entries in the file header that makes windows unable to correctly recognize the files.
