I have a 1994 Cherokee with 236,000 miles on it and I love it I got it used with 167,000 miles on it 5 years ago and it's been nothing but reliable, with the inline 6 cyl 4.0 you cannot go wrong, the only problem I am having is getting a neutral safety switch for it , without paying out the ***. my brother has a range rover, he got it used and it had really depriciated, however you spell it he got it for almost half off and it was like 4 yrs old, so you may want to take that into consideration too.

I own a 1996 Jeep Gr. Cherokee Limitedwith the 4.0L H.O. engine. Full time 4WD (Quadra-Trac). I love my jeep, it takes me everywhere I want to go and places that I probably shouldn't go. I've owned my jeep for 4 years almost 5 now and it has over 190,000 miles on it. In the past 5 years I've replaced the radiator, starter, and the catalytic converter. Which really isn't anything major, just normal things that wear out. The radiator started leaking at the drain and that's the reason it was replaced. Other than normal maintenance, i.e. oil/filter changes, belts, hoses, etc. not anything major.
I average 24MPG mix of city and highway but mostly highway. My jeep isn't modified in anyway other than an ARB winch bumper on the front. Stock tires, wheels, suspension etc.
I paid $8,000 for my jeep 5 years ago. Its fully loaded except for 2 options (heated seats, and sun roof) neither of which I would want anyways.
With factory tow hitch/wiring they are equipped to tow 5,000LBs. Which I have exceeded a few times and it pulls just fine. It also makes a great Hummer H2 recovery vehicle as even being stock it goes pretty much anywhere.
The 4.0L inline 6 engines are "bulletproof". They run forever when properly taken care of.

Note sure what the above are smoking, but yes I have one with over 220,000 miles..maybe overseas the parts are expensive but not in the US. These were made with MINIMAL changes from 1984 to 2001. Part are VERY available, in junk yards, parts stores and complete catalogs of material for modification or personalization of the individual unit.
The 4 liter is one of the best engines produced by any one. If you are looking, I would concentrate on those past 1991 as they engine became more powerful and the electrical up graded.
Steering issues???!!! Well, if you think this or any other veihicle will run forever with no maintenance, no it will not. Have I EVER had a steering problem..Let's see,,replaced the tie rod ends at around 180,000 MILES,,steering pump at 190,000 miles..the seals inside the power steering unit finally gave up at 210,000 miles..One hose leaked around 200,000 miles...Uh...not too bad.
Is is still running...YOU BET...but uh..with a few recent modifications...at 240,000 miles, engine was tired..but running every day..so I "Freshened" it up...is now a 4.7 liter..uh..this broke the rear axle..at around 250,000 miles. OK OK,,but the engine now produces on a dyno around 61% more torque..not jeep's fault..but now has a Ford 8.8..I could go on, but you get the idea.
Good Luck,,,might want to check parts prices and customizing options on that Range Rover.

I am now driving my second Jeep Cherokee 4.0. The first one had 415,000 miles on it when I sold it. It's still going strong. I now have a 1995 with almost 200,000 and it runs like new and gets about 20 miles to the gallon average. You can't beat a Cherokee for the money

if you live in town , i dunno why you would.. driving thru a muddy puddle does not count as "off road"
£100-150 for a tyre... they drink fuel ..
and if its not like 3-4 years old .. e.g. NEW they will tax you silly amounts.
parts aren't cheap either..
