The evil spiritual forces that we fight never sleep and constantly formulate new tactics to catch us off guard (the "wiles of the devil" in verse 11).
If you look at the passage you are referring to (Ephesians 6: 11-17), you notice that verse 12 says that we "wrestle" against these powers. That is a strong action word and the connotation is that we are never at rest in this warfare. We always have to be on guard and ready. The same in v. 13, when it uses the word "withstand".
In Verse 18, we are told to pray "always" and "with all perseverance and supplication". Again, this is a continual action that is required for those who would win the battle.
Notice too that the parts of the armor are both offensive and defensive in nature.
I also like that it says that we are to have our "loins girded about with truth". The connotation here is of a man wearing the kind of garb that was worn in OT times. It was something like a dress that was "girded" about the waist with a belt. When men would fight in battle, the bottom of the garment would be pulled up and tucked into the belt so that the warrior would have more freedom of movement in the battle. The metaphor, then, signifies being ready for warfare at all times. Always girded and on guard.
Jesus said that Satan was a murderer from his beginnings. Does this sound like someone we should let our guards down against?

If you have to put it on every day, what are you doing in the middle of the night that makes it come off? The armor of God will stay on 24/7 if you hold on to it. Carry the Bible with you. Keep one in your car, in your purse (if you are a girl), in your house, take one to meetings, events, parties, etc. Get an electronic bible that will fit in your pocket. Keep God's word next to you at all times. I do! I can refer to it at any time I need to for personal reasons or if someone else has a question for me or if someone of non-believes starts questioning my faith. God will never leave me or mankind!
Peace!

This is a metaphor in the Scripture that is not easily understood.
I believe it refers to arming ourselves with a proper attitude day by day and continually reassessing what our goals and motivation are in the Spiritual life.
Someone once said the reason we must go on being filled with the Spirit is we are leakers.
I think the nature of Spiritual things is such that unless we are constantly reaffirming and re-appraising our condition, we drift off into apathy.
"We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away." (Hebrews 2:1)
Just to give one example; this passage says to put on the helmet of salvation. In I Thessalonians 5:8 we are told to put on, as a helmet, the hope of salvation. This hope is a calm, confident expectation of future good, which guards our minds against fear and unbelief and pessimism, which this world is constantly trying to impose on the believer. Unless we take positive steps every day to guard against this, we are in danger of growing lukewarm and useless for the Kingdom of God.
If you live in a cold climate, you need to put on a coat and hat; otherwise the atmosphere will literally suck the life out of you.

Do you eat just once a day or week? NO! You eat a few meals per day. The same with prayer..."Pray without ceasing" so that you won't be tempted. The same applies to the armor.

It is an act of daily faith. You can't just have a simple solution like that. It shows to God your love is devoted towards him.

Put simply, and in another way, our old sinful nature, our "old man" simply doesn't wish to die. It keeps returning. We never reach a state of sinlessness until we are freed from these mortal bodies.

If you take your eyes off of the Lord, then the fiery darts of the devil will be coming your way. You can't pray and serve God one day and forget God the next day.
