Yes, but happiness is dependant upon good things happening.
Joy is deeper, and I have experienced joy even in the midst of devastating circumstances. The joy of the Lord is my strength!

it's true... we need joy... happiness is only because of a circumstance that causes us 2 be happy... joy is being happy through the good times as well as bad.. joy last forever while happiness is temporary... joy comes from your heart and you are passionate and full of zeal no matter what the circumstance...

It's the goal of every sentient being to want to be happy, it's logical... so altruism, wisdom, compassion, etc. can help you attain it, however if you think "stuff" and more "stuff" will make you happy/-ier it won't... trust me.
