Depending on where you are traveling to and your airline, it is often easy to fly stand by on an earlier flight to your same destination, with the same carrier.

Arrive at the airport early and notify the ticket agent. If there are open tickets they will generally switch you immediately.

If you need a guarenteed ticket on the earlier flight, you would need to switch your ticket which almost always carries fees but can be arranged with your airline either via phone or in some cases on the interent.

i travel into asia all the time and when i do return back to the states my arrival time is always a bit earlier; my experiences with united airline conx on a domestic portion would always put me in a position to try catching an earlier JFK flight. my first option is always "standby." customer servc agents informs me its the least expensive option, even at times when the flight is completely empty. however, if the change fee is comproable for a confirmed seat; and it does varied with the type of tkt u hold; make the decision then. As for myself, since my inbound has arrived earlier and i will be waiting for my confirmed flight regardless, why not standby free of charge for an earlier flight. since i am already at the airport i don't mind to standby to save a few dollar.

It also depend on the kind of ticket you have.
Some specify that you can not change your flight or that you can but will have to pay a penalty.
Some tickets allow you to fly almost any plane from that airline with only a minor fee.

Try to phone a contact number for your airline, keep your ticket near, as they will ask for all kinds of details.

If you can not phone the airline, or cannot get hold of them, go to a travel agent. (If there are more, take the one that arrange travels for businessmen.)
The will also know, sometimes they will charge you for the service, but mostly they will just charge the same as the airline will do.
