This ? is kind of a moot point, as only a fool will fire a weapon up into the air, having no idea where the bullet will come down. It's no wonder there are so many laws on the books making this a CRIME, because such a stupid shot HAS and WILL KILL, as well as cause serious injury!

Mythbusters Episode 50 worked on whether a bullet fired in the air can kill someone when it returns to earth.

In short, if it is fired straight up it will not. The bullet will tumble and reach a terminal velocity that may break the skin, but cause little real damage.

However, if it is fired at anything other than a 90 degree angle, it takes a ballistic path and keeps spinning as a bullet does going to any target. It will still do whatever damage the bullet would normally do when fried horizontally.

The best best is to practice good gun safety.

well it depends on the bullet size ands type and the velocity ofthe bullet end if the roof is older or newer and however far the bullet is fired but ya i would say that it is possible

Yup.

Of course it depends on the bullet. A 40-grain .22, eh maybe not. A heavy 300-grain bullet coming from 6-miles up...probably.

YES*.. It depends also on the construction of the materials of the roof*.... The larger the bullet, hence more damage and penetration*...

yes it picks up velocity from the gravity on its way back down ... i dont know how deep it will go but on CSI ( I know its a show, but they have real senerios) a man was shot from a yard down the block because of the trajectory of the stray shot.
