I read this today. I just love his explanation.
"When I asked where his devotion to the blessed mother started, Joe said that he heard Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen say on television one evening that in a family, if you want to ask your parents for something you go first to your mother. Joe said that after he met Archbishop Sheen and they had become good friends, he told him how much that advice meant. Archbishop Sheen said that he was simply passing on what the gospel story about the wedding feast at Cana told us. The servants told Mary that they had run out of wine, she told Jesus and then told the servants to do as Jesus instructed. She knew he’d listen to her request and, Archbishop Sheen told Joe, that’s the lesson for us – talk to Mary first. "

If you want to read the entire article, it's from the National Catholic Register, and you'll find it here: http://www.catholic.org/views/views_news.php?id=24621

For those of you too young to know who Joe is, read the article.

I love that story! The Blessed Virgin risked her life and reputation to bring our Savior into the world -- that's how much she cared about us. She risked alienating herself from Jesus by asking Him to help a young couple about to be socially embarassed by running out of wine at their wedding feast. That was love and concern in action, too.

She stood by the Cross and watched her Son die a hideous death, and yet she willingly allowed herself to become our Mother when Christ gave her to John and to all humanity. She was loyal, brave, humble, and above all, loving.

Why would that have all changed just because she's in Heaven now? It's not a case of "putting Mary before Jesus" as we're sometimes accused of doing when we ask her for her prayers. It's a case of knowing that she has a mother's heart and a mother's love for her Son and those whom He purchased with His own Precious Blood.

Our Blessed Mother deserves devotion as long as one is careful to to put her in place of God. She is the God bearer. My mother once told me "She is the chosen one and that's it." I thought, YES! THE CHOSEN ONE! God chose HER to be the mother of his son! In the Episcopal Church, she is not held as high in as in Catholicism but definitely more so that in other denominations. I have more devotion to Our Lady that the average Episcopalian. Those verses you gave are very true. nkowalsk, if she were just a typical sinner, then why would God chose her to be the mother, the mother of his son-the sinless, the infallable savior? May I ask what translation of the Bible you use? I've been looking for a good one lately and that verse has the modern translation with traditional language I've been looking for.

A good point was raised by Jean, and I am glad because it opened the door to a point I have been meaning to make,i.e."Thou shall have no other Gods before me" That is the context, and all else refers to that context. You can make all the statues you care to if you keep that in mind. No Catholic that I know worships Mary as God. For anyone who thinks the Mother of God does not have a special place in the overall scheme of salvation, you should throw away all pictures of anyone named Mary and change their name, and then pull down all the statues of Lincoln, Washington, etc. As for me, I know Joe is correct. Good article.

This is a great story to use to explain Marianists to other people. I went to a Marianist high school and I currently go to a Marianist university and have encountered so many arguments about how praying the Hail Mary or the Marianist Doxology is not worshipping Mary.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, PRAY FOR US sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Reminds me of a story of an Irish shoe-shiner in New York in the 1890s.While the shiner was buffing the shoe of a wealthy Protestant ,a Mt Carmel medal popped out from his shirt. The Customer sneered and said "Why do you wear that.thing? Mary was just a mother like your own!"The shiner replied "...But what a difference in the sons!"

There's just something unique about mothers. No matter how humble or unimposing, they consistently have pull with Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers... and Saviours. :)

Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.

And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
