you and two friends go to a hotel to stay in a room.. the room cost $30 so each one of you pay $10...so the total is $30...you guys pay the $30 to the hotel guy & make it to the room.. the hotel guy notices he charged you $5 more so he tells a employee to take the $5 to them..the employee desides to keep $2 for tip and gives the three guys there $3.....SO that means each one of you three only payed $9 for the room and 9 times 3 = is 27....meaning $27 (even if you caount the $2 the employee took its $29) what happend to the dollar???

Don't think of it that way...

$25 goes to the hotel
$2 goes to the employee
$3 back to friends

It adds up to $30.

I don't know if this is the only right answer, but it is A right answer:

It says the hotel guy charged you $5 over, so it can be that he looked and noticed your room rate should have been $25, but when you get the refund from the employee, you don't know that you were overcharged by $5, you think your room was supposed to be $27, so you each get a dollar back for the $10 that each of you put in.

he is adding wrong. the 2 dollars that the employee took isn't added back to the price of what they thought they paid the room. It is the ammount of dollars they got back that should be added to get $30. 9*3=27 (which is the ammount they think they paid because they each paid $9, without knowing the employee took 2) then add the $3 they received back. the $1 isn't missing, it just wasn't counted.

The Rooms Real price was 25 so if you take 25 and dived it by 3 you get 8.33- so if you take the extra dollar they got back its 9.33 and if you add that all up you get 27.99 + the 2 the bell boy stole make it 29.99 so the real question is where did the penny go? Its a misconsiption to always round up.

Backwards math never adds up right. Ask Ma & Pa kettle.

Anyway....

They Paid $10 each.
The room costs $25 (or $8.3333 each) so they were due $1.666 in change EACH ($1.6666 *3 = $4.9999).

They got $3 of thier change ($1 for each) and the busboy swiped $2 (.6666 cents from each of them).

SOOOOOO doing it right:

$8.333 *3 = 25 (ok, ok $24.99999...whatever)
$1 *3 = 3
$2 *1 = 2
-------
$30

The answer is in the formula of the question. There is no way he could have charged them an additional 5$ if they each only paid 10$ each... but nice try!!! :)

no because 25 divided by three is $8.3333333333333333333333333333333. not $9. The extra is in the change.
