if the tatoo artist isn't absolutely sanitary, you can get diseases like aids and hepatitis.
you can get an infection if you don't take good care of it.
you can get stuck with some bad artwork or maby not like your design after a few years, especiall if its in a place where you are likely to gain weight.
there are several things that could potentially go wrong..I mean you are breaking the skins surface to get a tatoo done
I am not against them and will get another someday...but make sure you see the artist open the package the needle came in, and that he/she uses NEW ink too (they can get it in one time use pods)

1. Getting a tattoo hurts. The closer you are to the bone, the worse it hurts.
I am chubby, my tattoo on the arm hardly hurt, but the one on my ankle did! I have a very slender friend who has a tattoo on her hip and she says she went through hell.
2. A tattoo is for life. So think carefully about the motive and where you want it. For example, a navel tatto may look hot when you are 18 and trim, but after a pregnancy it might not look so good anymore.
It is possible to remove tattoos with a laser, but you can still see where the tattoo has been, because the skin will have burning scars there. All the laser does is burn the ink out of the skin.
3. Choose you tattoo parlor with care. Go there and watch him/her work before you get your tattoo. Aside from the sanitary questions others have raised (sterile needles and equipment, one-way-pots of ink...) see also if you like the artists style. As with any art, every artist has their own style and some are better with some designs than others.
4. A healing tattoo needs lots of care or it will get infected. It's basically just an open wound and has to be treated as such. A good tattoo artist will give you detailed advise on how to treat a fresh tattoo.

Tattooing is safe if you go to a legal and licensed shop. Make sure the shop you chose is clean and taken care of. Most licensed shops use autoclaves and follow strict procedure in order to make sure people are safe. Don't hesitate to ask the shop what steralization methods they use. If they don't want to answer your questions or give you a hard time, they are not the shop you want to use. Also make sure the artist wears new disposable gloves and opens up all the needles in front of you from a sterile package and that they use clean small disposable cups for the ink. Any reputable shop will be there to explain the process and answer questions regarding all this stuff.
There are always complictions that can arise from doing any sort of body modification. Usually as long as you follow your artists aftercare regimine you should be ok. Don't listen to your friends or do what you find online. All artists have a different way of taking care of the work they do, if you do not follow the instructions given and complications do arise they will not stand behind it. As long as you take care of your new ink you shouldn't have any problems, there are cases of people having allergies to the inks in their skin, but this is not very common and can usually be taken care of with anitbiotics if needed.
Research your shop before you go, check out the artisits and porfolios. Just because it is a licensed shop does not mean you are going to get a great tattoo. All artisits are know for their different styles and talents. Aritist vary greatly from, portraits, cartoony, nature/florals, creative freehand, modern line work, or some do nothing but follow a stencil on the wall. Don't run to any shop just to get it done. I made that mistake, it's not fun having to get a bad tattoo covered. Also please put some thought into your tattoo. A tattoo should tell a story it should be part of who you are not just a picture taken off the wall so that you can look cool. Be sure to put some thought into it before you do it, it is going to be with you for life make sure it means something to you no matter how silly or little it is it should be something special for yourself not just a silly picture so you can say you have a tat and your cool. Lame tattoos are just not cool!!!

Tattooing is safe if you go to a reputable tattoo shop. They use clean instuments And practice good hygene inside of the shop. If you decide to get one, do your research, whatever you choose make sure it's what you want. You have to wear it for life. Go to the shop you may get one from. Look it over, after you choose an artist, watch him tatoo someone else to see if he"s being safe like cleaning his station, wearing gloves, etc. I have 5 myself and they do hurt, it depends where on your body you get it. Some areas don't hurt as much as others. It's not bad though, before you know it, it will be over. Good Luck. The only thing I see that could go wrong is if you move while your'e getting tattooed. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO A REPUTABLE SHOP.

Tattooing is safe...and yes something could go wrong...there's all sorts of bacteria out there and you could get an infection...also you could gain weight and stretch the tattoo out of shape or lose weight and have wrinkles in it...and then there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction to the ink...this to name just a few of the bad things that could happen...SO think carefully first!

A lot of good advice; particulary about making sure the shop is licensed, the ink and needles are opened new for you. Tattoos are a risk factor for disease if not done in sterile conditions with new ink & needles. Many of my biker friends have hepatitis C from tattoos back in the day before they knew that disease could be transmitted that way. Best wishes.

the answer from Chris is highly clouded!
I have tattoos and if the needles and equipment is sterilized then there is no problem with infection (unless you work in the sewers or something). Also, of course things can go wrong, that's why you go to a licensed parlour and make absolutely sure before you have a permanent picture on your skin.

i've never had a tattoo but i understand that they are painful to get and it is easy to get an infection in them. also it increases your chance of getting hiv if you don't go to a good tattoo parlour. this information comes to me from my niece who's had tattoos.

if the equipment isn't clean you can get a staph infection or HIV or who knows.
Probably the biggest mistake is that you put something on your body that you wish hadn't years later.
