I found it in my backyard chirpping and looking for its parents but it cant really fly yet. I think the nest is all the way up this giant tree that i cant get to. Should i keep it or leave it? I want to help it survive because without me it will die because it cant fully fly yet and already fell in my pool once. Help!

Yes the parent will still come back even if i did touch him and i put him on a big piece of wood and he sat there chirpping for an hour. I watched and his parents came once, and then left and i didnt see them anymore, not even at the nest

This is a fledgling...a bird that has left the nest on it's own and is still learning to fly...this is completely normal. If the parents are tending to it....this is normal.. leave the bird alone. They would'nt be going to the nest as there are probably no more chicks in it. They may have more than this one chick and that is why they are not feeding often...they need to spend time to forage for food for their chicks AND themselves. You can put the chick in a "safe" place...such as a tree or scrub where a cat or other animal might not notice it..but do not move it much or the parents will not be able to find it. If it is in a protected area....you have nothing to worry about...just let nature take it's course. DO NOT worry about birds abandoing thier young due to human scent being on them..this is an old wives tale..not true at all, birds have a poorly developed sense of smell.

If you have a wildlife rehab center nearby, you could admit it to them.

If not, and you can't get it back in the nest, and you don't want to just leave it to nature, you can do a couple things.

Here's a good site that details what you can do with it: http://www.starlingtalk.com/babycare.htm

Making a makeshift nest is a good idea if you can't reach the actual one. A lot of times the parents are still keeping an eye on it, whether you notice or not. Good Luck! Hope the little guy makes it.

Edit: The thing about parents abandoning the baby after you've touched it is NOT TRUE! It's an old wive's tale. Most birds have very poorly developed senses of smell.

Now that you've touched it the parents will not go near it. They can smell humans and now that your smell is on the baby bird the parents will abondon it and leave it to die.

You have two choices: You can either carefully take it to a vet in a shoebox and let them take it from there, or you can call your local vet and ask for advise on how to care for it yourself. But don't leave it stranded now that you've touched it! The poor little guy won't survive without some help. If you ever see a nest or eggs or a baby bird in the future, unless a cat is going after it or something, stay away. The parent birds will abandon anything that smells like humans.

EDIT: Ok, apparantly I was wrong about parents abandoning baby birds if they smell like humans. I guess my mom told me that when I was a kid and I never questioned it! Sorry about the mistake guys... I was just trying to help based on the info I thought I had. You learn something new every day! Hope the baby bird makes it!

hard boiled eggs are ok but you should find some bugs, crickets, worms, ext, mash them up for the sparrow because it is a wild bird. Seeds are best for this bird. You could also feed it some fruit and vegies in small amount, but dont leave fruits and vegies in the box for more then 2 hours. intell you can bring it to a shelter.

This is the time of year when many bird species are fledging their young. This is natural. Leave the bird alone and let nature take its course. Either the bird will fly, mostly likely, or some predator will get it.
