Alamogordo NM is the closest town.

When I was in the navy I was stationed there. The closest would be Alamogordo NM, Las Cruces NM, about 30 miles each. El Paso TX about 45 miles. We considered White Sands the boondocks, middle of nowhere. I was so glad when I got transferred to a ship.
