I have two small dogs about 6 months old. They have flea collars on, but I'm still finding ticks. Do I have to treat the yard and if so what over the counter product can I use? Do I have to treat in the house as well? Help please....

Wow, over the counter stuff is pretty good, hoewver a vet can give you stuff that will be more effective and last a couple of months.

You are wise to consider their environment. If they are indoor/outdoor pets then yes, treat the yard, the house and the puppies.

What I have done is dust them with flea / tick powder outside. But the problem is they are always outside. Rural areas especially suffer from bugs.

Here is a good link that might give you some good ideas....

I hope this helps!

The collars you are using supposedly prevent fleas AND ticks, however none of the over-the-counter flea/tick collars really do the job.

You can use Kennel Dip which can be gotten from an online pet medicine place, or your COOP, or Tractor Supply Co, and probably from any good pet store. Kennel dip is inexpensive and you mix a little in a gallon of water, and wet the dog thoroughly once a month with it if you're not going to use Frontline Plus, Advantage or K9-Advantix drops.

This is a bad year for fleas and ticks.

The way to treat your yard is to get Diazanon granules and just spread / throw them out all over the grass and flower beds. Takes care of June bugs when done at the right time and crickets as well.

If you have REASON to believe fleas have come inside your home, the way to get rid of them is to bug bomb the house once every 4 days for 2-3 times. This kills the live fleas and ticks, but the repetition is needed because it does NOT kill the larvae in the eggs and you have to kill them AFTER they hatch.

Flea collars are useless - the flea has to walk over the collar to be affected, how useless is that? And they do not treat ticks.

You need to go into a vets to get a decent over the counter treatment - Frontline, Revolution and Advantage are all good. Frontline is my favourite. You may well need to treat your yard, and you most definitely need to treat your house - where fleas are present on your animal they will be in your house too. Again, a vet can provide you with an effective spray.

EDIT: revolution isn't necessarily the best - it kills tapeworms and ear mites, so it depends what you want. Frontline Plus/Combo doesn't sterilize fleas, it kills them - and it kills the flea eggs too, so once you've sprayed your house and sorted out the immediate problem, Frontline Plus/Combo should keep you from ever having to use a housespray again.

First of all, throw the flea collar away! They keep fleas away from the neck.... 1/10 of the body!!!

Get Capstar from your vet for the dogs. Give it to them. After 12 hrs, apply a topical flea/tick control like K-9 Advantix, Advantage, Frontline.

The capstar will kill fleas already on the dog, and the topical will kill fleas and ticks that get on the and try to bite. It wouldn't hurt to treat your yard either.

No they are not, trust me, I know from plenty of personal experience having had and currently having both dogs and cats both. In my experience Frontline Plus has been the most effective, especially when used with Capstar. It is also worth noting, that some jerk I know (family, unfortunately) killed two of his cats when he and his girlfriend put a full dose of Heart's flea medication on each of his kittens; needless to say, I'm not a fan of the cheap stuff.

There is NO best or safe OTC flea/tick product and this includes flea colalrs.
OTC products are pretty much worthless and they can be very dangerous to your pet..they can cause skin irritations, skin burns, neurological issues, seizures and death.

Get to a vet and buy a safe, effective flea/tick problem and get that flea collar off and in the trash..

Sevin dust! It's a powder, you can get it in the lawn and garden department of Walmart. You put it all over the lawn, and can even put the 5% on your pets, as you would any flea powder.

Also, buy some Pennyroyal, and plant it all over.. Pennyroyal is by definition "flea repellent". And that stuff spreads!!

Hi...Frontline combo...It's an ampule you put on the back of their necks, this stuff actually sterilizes the fleas,so any eggs laid after coming into contact with it won't hatch...

Revolution is the BEST by far. It takes care of all types of bugs. Ask your vet for some, it's well worth it over the crap you buy at stores.
