i notice that whenever i eat (most) fresh fruits i get an itchy and uncomfortable feeling in my throat when i swallow. i also get tightness, itching, and ulcers on my lips. (all symptoms pass within a half-hour or less). these symptoms appear whenever i eat fresh apples, watermelon, peaches, strawberries, and some others. this makes it very hard to enjoy eating fresh fruit. is this an allergy, and how serious? is there any treatments that help this? thanks!

I have the same allergy, but to fruits with pits in them. It's a minor allergy, and there isn't much to do about it. But what i find helps, is that after i eat whatever fruits, i just eat some bread, or something after it, because it calms down the itchy feeling in my throat. Also, I'm sure you could take like benadryl ( if it doesn't make you as sleepy as it does to me) or another anti histamine, to help.

If you really think there is a problem, don't try to diagnose yourself. Go to a doctor, or even an allergist. At such a young age, I'd assume you're still under your parents health insurance and they usually cover things like visits to the allergist and an allergy test. Diagnosing yourself can turn into a very dangerous thing. If you are truly allergic, the outcome will not be a good one if you keep testing your body. Go see an expert and get the right answer the first time.

This happens to be what I am suffering from too! I AM NOT ALONE!!! Yay!

I think this may be caused by something called a "food intolerance". WebMD.com defines food intolance as:

"an abnormal response of the body to an ingested food that is not an allergy. Examples of this are food poisoning and reactions to chemicals in food or drinks such as caffeine."

The way I help this issue without going to the doctor is taking 2 antiacids, or avoiding eating fruit to a point that your stomach and/or throat feels uncomfortable.

However, it is always best to see the doctor if you think this is serious or not. Your doctor can do some skin tests to see if you really are allergic to some fruits or not. ;-)

I have food allergies also, your best bet is too go to any allergist and explain to them what happens when you eat these fruits. They will test you and see how your body reacts when it encounters these things and from there the doctor will tell you what you can do about it. It might also be that you are allergic to the skin of the fruits and not the fruit itself. But you should go to a doctor and get tested. Good luck

It is called a cross-reaction. It is where one who has an allergy to one thing may develop an allergy to other things. Birch pollen has been mentioned. I foud a link with a useful article for you.

My husband has a similar allergy and avoids the fresh version of these fruits. He can, however, eat them cooked.

It is called oral allergy syndrome. I used to have that problem with all raw fruits and vegetables too. Even the juice of watermelon on my hands would make them break out in a rash. It is linked with pollen allergies. I went to an allergist and had desensitation shots for my allergies to pollen. After five years of being on the shots, my allergy to raw fruits and vegetables went away!

This happens to me too!! It never used to, but a couple years ago I was exposed to fields of flowering canola crops and had a very itchy case of hives over my entire right leg, and ever since then I can't eat: apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, or plums, without my lips, gums and throat swelling and feeling itchy. I can still eat berries, melons, kiwi, etc. I'm convinced I got some kind of allergy overload and now my body goes nuts. Speaking of nuts, I also can't eat raw walnuts or almonds now either. One of your answerers recommended desensitization shots - that sounds good to me!!
