We were perfectly created but sin has flawed us.
Ever notice how innocent children are until they become tainted by the adults in the world?

I'll give you the Biblical version first since you raised the issue of "God." Then I'll go onto other reasons.
Actually, God did create perfect beings....Adam and Eve. They would never know sickness, suffering, or even death. They and their descendants would have stayed like this forever in a paradise Earth if it was'nt for their disobedience to God's laws.
God did promise death of Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge. With some help from Satan, they disobeyed, and thus got the boot from paradise. They would now have to toil for their sustainance, and would grow old and die. They did live to around 900 years old, which shows how well tuned their bodies were. Their descendants though would suffer the same fate, and would become more corrupted as time went on. Nowadays, we're so corrupted that we're lucky if we live to 100 years old.
For the non-Biblical reasoning, maybe it's for reincarnation reasons. We live in some heavenly place, but come to Earth from time to time to have different experiences....some of those to suffer. Why do this, I don't know.
Being that your an Atheist, why would you want to suffer, being that in the end you'll become non-existent anyways. Why not just "off" yourself now and save all the trouble of suffering in the future. In fact, what's the point of living and maintaining the human species, if we just become non-existent after death? If the Earth blew up, would the universe miss us? Your belief really does'nt make any sense.
I believe there is something more to just existing and dying. This is what gives us hope, morals, and compassion to our fellow beings, whether human or not. Think about this.

God did not create imperfect human being. He created us all perfect. The only reason people do bad things is because they are tempted by Satan. Without him we would have no desire to do sinful things. The original sin from Adam and Eve might be able to shed some light on this as well.

Human beings became imperfect when sin entered in. Sin was not created by God but the potential was there. To have a people that were not just robotic followers, there must be choice, whether to follow or not. Lucifer chose this course first and introduced it to man who in turn followed this stray course as well. The earth suffers for this today.
One day, all things will become new and this relationship will be restored.

I will look at it from rational, scientific and logical angle with the Bible in perspective - i do not subscribe to any group whatsoever - as all of them is based on books, writings, philosophies, wisdom, experience - in one word knowledge - knowledge which we all know is incomplete. I am still questioning and observing but without the prejudice of knowledge or anything guiding me or my thinking. You cannot draw a new picture on a tainted canvas :)
Now even the scientist today when they create something - they try to be as perfect as possible - be it a space shuttle, or a car, or a medicine or a genetic clone, or a mathematical formula or a theory whatever.
So an infinite powerful entity like God would always create something which is absolutely perfect in all sense - we are not talking robots. I agree that free will pushes us towards both good and evil - but so far evil has been the winner - but why God did not provide us with enough strength or qualities so that goodness prevails ? Or maybe the manual or guidance is missing or is hidden below the twisted lines of all divine books... i am trying to find that out.
Also for the believer please remember, God himself acknowledged his (rather his team's) imperfect creation
and decided to wash out all with the flood. Please read the Book of Enoch (minus his own additions and observations) for complete details of what his angels / colleagues did when they thought(?) they were abandoned and left on this primitive planet. They taught all the advancements without realizing that human evolution (mental) has not reached that level to use those things properly. Its like giving a gun to a child. And so even today we find "gross mis-utilization" of science and are left with emissions , aids and missiles ... diff story.
Also God was half way through when Adam & Eve eat from the knowledge tree / broke into his archive with the hacker Lucifer and he got frustrated, offended and depressed.
And once he got fed up with all that was happening - or a project gone astray - he simply flooded it but also agreed that he will never do it again.
The Genesis says "God created man in his own image" - i think one small letter dropped out somewhere along the way - as it was copy-pasted, edited, added, modified by not less than three authors over the ages (a proven fact) ... lets now correct it as - "God tried to create man in his own image" - this will make everything understandable from all angles.
Else the other logical answer to why God made us imperfect would be - "He was afraid of competition"
Thanks for reading - amen!

Since God gave human beings free will, there would always be a possibility that they would misuse that free will.
The inability to "jump over fields" or "never suffer from hunger" are not signs of imperfection, but physical limitations.

God did make perfect human, but he also gave us free will. So we humans decided to screw it up for ourselves by sinning. Now a days it's hard to imagine a perfect human since humanity is going down the drain. People are becoming worse and worse. But it was once perfect, but we ruined it, NOT God. It's like looking at a wrecked car. We asked the maker of the car, "why did you make such a messed up car?" Isn't that a stupid question. The maker of the car made it 'perfect,' but the one who owned it ruined it. It's the same about us human. Once perfect, but all we see now is a 'wrecked car.'

Free will, it is our personal freedom that makes us susceptible to imperfection, your decision to be an atheist would be a good example of your free will and its ability to draw you away from God and rightousness(perfection). We can only try to walk prefect road in life but we decide to let the things in our way have power over us, but in the end it is our own decision

This is a question that has been debated by theologians and philosophers for many years. I cannot say that I have any better answers than they. Nevertheless, let me venture a guess.
God created the conditions where free will creatures would be able to make a choice between obedience and disobedience to God. This condition existed when God created an angel called Lucifer who was without sin yet, apparently, had free will. Lucifer chose to rebel against God and sin (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezek. 28:13-15). Likewise, Adam and Eve, having been made by God without sin, listened to the devil and chose to sin against God (Gen. 3).
But God did not cause them to sin (James 1:13). In the freedom of their wills, each decided to rebel against God and sin entered the world (Rom. 5:12). God simply allowed the condition to exist where sin was possible.
An analogy can be found in the relationship between a parent and a child. A parent can create the condition that makes disobedience possible yet the parent remains innocent if the child sins. For example, if a parent tells his child to clean up his room and the child does not, he has rebelled. But, the parent is not responsible for the child’s sin, nor did he cause the child to sin. The child had a choice to obey or not to obey.
Likewise, God has created the condition in the world where the ability to rebel against Him was possible. Yet, he is not responsible for that rebellion once it has been committed. Therefore, sin originated with Lucifer who was the first to rebel and entered the world through Adam who likewise chose disobedience.

God did not create imperfect humans, he created perfect humans but unfortunately they are brought up to be imperfect by imperfect adults, so the cycle continues.

God, who is truly perfect, created us, imperfect beings, so that we could learn and grow into holiness. God wants us to have free will. He doesn't want robots, who cannot think and reason and choose holiness, for ourselves. We are thinking, feeling, emotional beings. Thank God!
