Keep doing what you're doing and stay polite. The best way to influence people is by setting the right example.
Meanwhile, when you catch yourself being "bothered" by the attitude of someone who is inconsiderate, realize that you are giving them some control over your sense of well-being. Make a point to shift your focus to something or someone positive. With some practice, these negative people will become less and less of an irritation.

People don't care anymore. It's kinda sad really. I am 33 and have been in 'customer service' related jobs for quite a lot of my life -- any job be it cashier, sales, IT Help Desk, etc ... the job IS customer service --- you CHOSE that job knowing full out that it would require customer interaction and people would be asking you questions. Why is it then so difficult for those (average) 8 hours a day to accept this and deal with people with at least some slight curtesy. Now, I will admit that in my jobs I have had plenty of people to whom I would rather not have had to deal with -- but it was my job to. So I did. And I do so in as polite a manner as possilbe. When they were gone did I maybe say something to a coworker about it? Probably -- but to that customer (or whenever ANY customer was around) I would offer that person whatever assistance my job entailed. Seriously, the managers of these work places should take a look at their workforce. If they see someone who is rude - then guess what, that person probably shouldn't have a customer service job. "I only make $7/hr... Why should I care?" -- Because it's your job to care! You don't like it? Suck it up while your there and consider a career change if you don't like it. You have a problem with the job, tell your boss - not the customer who is asking about something.

I work in a customer oriented position. We are taught that no matter what be polite, professional and smile. That we are providing a service in return we receive a paycheck. Usually people acting that way has nothing to do with you as a person. They are probably unhappy w/ their job, home life etc etc, and they bring that attitude to work . Don't take it personal, but what i would do when that happens again ask to speak to a manager or some one higher up and let them know how you feel. They usually don't know that there is a problem until it is brought to their attention. You might actually get a discount or some type of compensation as well.

I think it's a combination of lack of respect for people and poor management skills. Employees should be trained on how to deal with people and what behavior is acceptable and what isn't. In addition, good employees should be paid well so they are encouraged to keep performing admirably.
My advice to you is to complain when you receive unacceptable service. This may not help you right away, but it may prevent you or others from being treated poorly in the future.

It's because the standard is set so low now. Employers are just grateful that their employees show up. When a cashier or someone treats me like that I just remind myself that I'd rather see her working behind that counter than sucking up my tax dollars on welfare. It's sad that those are the options for us hard working people.

I work in a retail store and we try very hard to please our customers. If you 've had either a very bad or very good experience, write a letter to the store manager. In my store, complaint letters are addressed with the associate, and compliment letters are publically celebrated. Good managers know that happy customers are repeat customers.

I think too many people have forgotten that it is good customer service that keeps people coming back. If I receive good customer service somewhere, they have my business no questions asked.
