It depends what state you live in. This sounds like malicious mischief, a misdemeanor which would result in a sentence of restitution, 24 months informal probation (no reporting to probation), fine, restitution and perhaps community service.

Your problem is proving who did it. Unless you have a security camera which caught the person in the act, chances are you won't be able to prove anything.

If the tampering caused you to have an accident which injured you severely, then the charge might be a felony such as attempted murder.

Even if you know who did this, and you took them to small claims court, you would have a difficult time convincing the judge that the defendant was guilty without absolute proof in the way of photographs, videos, witnesses.

This is horrible. I am sorry that happened. If you have vandalism insurance, talk to your insurance company.

Looking at this I would say it is 'Criminal Damage'
In the UK if the value of damage is below £5,000, the maximum sentence is 6 months in prison and/or a fine. If it is over £5,000 then maximum is 10 years imprisonment.

If it can be proved it was done with the intent to endanger life, or reckless to that fact (didn't care and should have known) then maximum sentence is life imprisonment
These are the maximums and of course the actual sentence imposed would depend on the circumstances and previous convctions. Also, if it was racially or religiously motivated this will increase the penalties.
My sympathies to you, no one should touch a persons stuff! Mindless

there was a law bought out for motor bikes some years ago.
it states that if you tamper with someones motor bike,it is an instant charge of manslaughter.
it works like this.
if you mess with someones motor bike, then you must be trying to kill them.
plain & simple.
i don't know if it works the same for trikes, but willful sabotage, can be as much as 10 years, because of the danger involved.

Castration sounds good! But a metaphorical slap on the wrists is more likely.
First offence? Could get 3 months and be out in 6 weeks or less

Here in the USA, if you can't prove it then nothing! If you can, then you can probably get a vandalism or willful misconduct charge (misdemeanor - usually nothing but probation), plus all of your court expenses paid, your lost wages (due to court time) and repairs to the bike.

Can you prove who did it? I mean prove not just know.
I think someone who does this sort of thing without provocation should have his leg amputated and then be hammered into the ground with the soggy end

I think you must take action in the civil court to claim damages rather than in a criminal court.
