To explain this, we have to go back to the time when the sacred prasad "Payasam" was distributed to all the 3 queen equally by Dasaratha after the "putrakameshti yaga'. Sumitra took bath and she was drying her hair on the terrace. She kept her share of Payasam on the parapet of terrace and she was silently brooding her fate. Kaikeyi's would be son, is eligible for the Kingdom as promised by Dasaratha to Kekaya king before the wedding. The eldest queen Kausalya's would be son will be the natural heir to the kingdom. But what about her fate? At the very instant an eagle came from the sky and snatched the golden vessel in which the prasad is kept as a share of "Sumitra". She was aghast at the development and was fearing the rebuke she will face from 'King Dasaratha and sage Vashista. She silently came down and narrated the sad turn of affairs to Kausalya and Kaikeyi. Because of the love and affection to Sumitra(not like present day), they willingly shared their prasad with Sumitra. Now she got two parts each one from Kausalya and Kaikeyi. Now Ram was born to Kausalya, his part of the prasad was born as Lakshman to Sumitra and the other half from Kaikeyi was born as "Satrukun'. From the days when they were put on cradle, Lakshman was wailing harsh without taking milk etc day and night. When sage Vashista came to know about this, He foresaw a vision in which he was able to see the reason. Hence he asked Sumitra to place Lakshman in the company of Ram in the cradle. Afterwards, Lakshman become peaceful and happy and was drinking milk. But the supreme sacrifice of Lakshmana was when he left his newely wed Urmila and accompanied his brother and Sita mata to the jungle for 14 years. When Shri Lakshman fell down to the Asthra(nagasthar) in the war and lay unconscious, Rama wailed "no body would be equal to you oh brother. I can get others but not you. No body is equal to you in valour and devotion. Such was the love of Ram to Lakshman.

Rama was always very composed andgrave. He was the perfect example for us. Truthful pure and always concerned for the welfare of the people, He put being a responsible king before everything else.
He loved Lakshman so much. He couldnt bear his younger brothers absence for even a moment. from the time they were small boys automatically, thet two twins of Sumitra, Lakshmana and Shatrughana, became attached to Rama and Bharat respectively.
No matter what task Rama asked Lakshman to do, He always obeyed His elder brother. Laksham was very hot tempered, and was frustrated that He could not order Rama to forcibly take Ayhodhya, or other things, He wanted to protect Rama from but was unable, so He promised Himself, that in next lives, He will be the elder, so He can better protect and serve His lord.
There was only a few times that Rama lost His temper, or showed strong emotion. one notable time came during the war in Lanka. When Lakshman fellunconscious in battle, Rama cried piteously, and felt all strength or reason to continue pointless. Of course Lakshman became better by Hanumans amazing abilities, and Rama was happiliy reunited with His beloved brother! I cannot describe the love of Rama with Lakshman. only to say it is incomprehensible to us and deeper than millions of oceans..
jaya Sita Ram Lakshman Jaya Hanuman!!!

I have heard the story since I was a baby. Senior Vaishnavas tell this history from Ramayan of saint Valmiki.
I can only understand emotions that I have experience of. My love for my brothers and sisters is very strong. Painfully strong. But I have never heard of anyone serving their brother, the way that Lakshman has served Sri Ramachandra!
Lakshman was the epitome of a loving devoted younger brother.
For forteen years of Sri Ramas exhile, Lakshman did not eat or sleep. He massaged Sri Ramas lotus feet and did so many services.
Once, Sri Rama left Sita in Lakshmans protection to go after a black magician who had taken the form of a deer. When Sri Rama shot the demon with his perfect aim, the demon cried out in Ramas voice, and that is why Sita devi became worried for Sri Rama.
When Sita Thakurani was worried for Rama, and told Lakshman to protect Him, Lakshman drew a mystical protective circle around mother Sita and her cottage. (Lakshman was expert in all kinds of arts and knew powerful mantras) He then went to search for Rama.
Because of some evil trick, The Super Demon Ravan, stole Sita devi away when the two brothers were gone.
That is how the battle of Lanka began, and Lakshman faught ferociously for his brother Rama. Rama defeated Ravana. Mother Sita was rescued and then she entered fire and proved Her purity. (Rama did this for her protection from the judgement of the people)
However a citizen of Ayodhya, doubted that Sita devi was pure. Rama had to set the example of a good king, and sent Mother Sita to live in the care of the old Rishis. Ramachandra was depressed and morose after this. Ramachandras two sons were born there at the hermitage.
Lakshman served his brother until the end as did the other three brothers. Bharat was also deeply attached to Rama and served Rama in so many ways.
There is no space to glorify the Supreme Lord Sri Ramachandraji in this small place with our inexperienced and little understanding.
But we should hear these histories, from a pure Saint who is a liberated soul unbound by Maya and fully realized.
I am offended by prophetabduls strange twisted version of Sri Ramayan. I never heard such a terrible story. Please disregard his or her ignorance. I think that maybe some nonhindus do not acurately know the corect history of Ramayan.

say only Shri Ram Chandra not say Lord as he was not God but was a great soul and a best brother for Laxman as well as Bharat and Strughna. He was a great King of Awadh and was a son of King Dashrath order of which he never denied. Overall you may say Ram Chandra was a great soul so he calls as God and he do much more for human being which can not be ignored. I advise you to take a lesson from the brotherhood of Rama and Laxman

When HANUMAN bought the Sanjeevini to save the life of LAXMAN; with extreme exhilaration RAMA hugged the HANUMAN and said that
"From this moment you are also my brother..as the BHARATA is"
It is a surprising statement of Rama; which indicates RAMA always treated Bharata as most nearer..not Laxman.
Laxaman was very happy to follow the footsteps of elder brother with unquestionable respect upon RAMA

Like you said there are no words in this world which would suffice to explain or to praise the love the lord has for his younger brother. But it is a love far above all. Lakshman received the love of a father, mother, brother, friend all from Lord Ram even though he considered himself to be a servant to the Lord. The love between them was just like the lord himself, infinite, unfathomable, demanding nothing in return. It was pure love between a Bhagvan & a Bhakth.
