I am very bad at mythology...but i think when Sita mata was putting sindoor, hanumanji asked the reasons for the same....and sitaji replied this is for the welfare of Shri Rama, her husband
Shri hanumanji then said if putting a little bit of sindur on forehead is sufficient for welfare of Rama, i will put on my body....so that nothing wrong happens to him
this is a story of total devotion and dedication...and that z why sindur is offered to shri Hanumanji

After the coronation of Shri Rama and Sita which was witnessed by Hanuman, Rama bade farewell to all those who accompanied Him to Ayodhya to witness the coronation. Hanuman's turn came. The Lord bade him also farewell. But Hanuman was reluctant and never willing to leave the Lord's company. The night came. Shri Ram and mother Sita Devi were about to retire to their inner apartments. Hanuman too tried to accompany the Lord. But Rama forebade him, telling that Sita mata alone can accompany him to the inner chamber. Hanuman, innocent he was enquired the reason for the same. The Lord out of mercy, pointed out to the "sindoor" on the forehead of Mata and told Hanuman, because of the Sindoor, a symbol of "Sowmangalya" she can accompany Him. But Hanuman was very clever. He immediately anointed his entire body with 'sindoor' and insisted upon Lord Rama that now he too is eligible to come with Him. That is His Bakthi, the love towards His lord and his complete childlike innocence.

He once saw Queen Sita applying sindoor.
Sita was embrassed and she said that shree Ram likes most Sita was the modest female.

I do not think this version is prevalent in South India. In the Asokavanam when sri.Hanuman fought singlehandedly the son of Ravana -Akshayakumara and his army and the heros he fought before--the enemies penetrated every inch of sri,Hanuman's body with arrows and his whole body was blood smeared and he looked a red bodied person-so his body is smeared with red Chintoor. Some say to cure his wounds ,when he returned from Lanka Jaambhavaan a wise man smeared his body with Rasa Chindooram(red mercric salt)as a cure and so his body looks red.

I do not see Paul Able's answer. I have earlier requested to you not use abusive languages/words against any one. This is not a good remark of a good person in R & S. I do not know if his answer was deleated hence unable to see it. Let him say anything and why should we get worried and retort. Why should we go to such low level and do it, when we are high R & S contributors. I am sure you will take this as my advice and try to avoid pl.

sindhur, vermilion, on women's fore head ---nice to view.
I offer sindur to marrie women whe n they visit my home- -with iintension of SAFETY to her beloved. & to overcome household troubles. Sindur is ever -ready on table.----Hanuman too might have thought in this manner of security& well- being of Ram.so he also applied sindur.
