The longest word in the english languge is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, a 45-letter word which refers to a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silicious particles. Research has discovered that this word was originally intended as a hoax. It has since been used in a close approximation of its originally intended meaning, lending at least some degree of validity to its claim.[1]

Well it depends on if your thinking about the longest proper noun or the longest common word.
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is an actual medical term that has 45 letters but there is a place called:
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu.... that takes the cake for the longest proper noun.. Also there is a waaaaay longer word that I dont think anyone has actually used for anything and its posted here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_word_in_English

It's a scientific term for some bacteria, that much I know. However, if you exclude scientific terms, then the longest standard use word in the English language is supercalifragilistickespialedoshious.
