Over and over again I see how people compartmentalize their beliefs and their morality and their jusitifcation and their self-image.

Over and over I see the extraordinary lengths to which people will go to justify their knee-jerk subservience to authoritarianism.

And I wonder why it should have surprised the world that so many Germans supported Hitler.

Every society breeds people to be hopelessly obedient to the powers-that-be.

Religion is but another tool, and one Hitler used as he climbed to power.

Are the vacuous answers we see too frequently coming from people who, in '33, would have thought Hitler was a "God-send"?

if folks can believe in talking snakes and that women can be turned into salt licks then they can be manipulated into believing just about anything, especially if it appears to cater to their self interests. Rove knew this and played the Evangelical Fundies like a fiddle at a hoe down.

The religious right like to paint "liberals" as un-American and unpatriotic, also.

The Bush administration has used this quite a bit, also. If you don't support the war, then you therefore must not love your country, you support terrorism, etc....

It's sickening. And it's also so obvious, it almost makes me embarrassed to call myself an American these days.
