thumbs down?

Question

I asked a question a few minutes ago and as I was reading the answers, I saw someone had given lots of thumbs down to people, answers that were good, even.

I feel that giving a thumbs down isn't nice unless the answer is totally not relevant or inflammatory.

What do you think? Is it unnecessarily mean, or is it fun giving them out?

Yes, I've noticed that and it bothers me a lot. When people ask questions here they want answers and they want them to be right. If the asker can't tell which answer is the right one he/she may rely on the 'thumbs'. So it's not fair for the asker nor for the person who gave the right answer and who really wanted to help.

Yes, you have the right to your privacy, I completely agree. If it weren't proper Yahoo wouldn't give it as an option.

If an answer doesn't answer the question, is insulting, or in any way violates the Guidelines (link, bottom of page), then it should be reported using the Report Abuse link, to let Yahoo know about it (they'll take it down and dock the user; really bad abusers are banned).

If you look in Help, you'll see that thumbs are a way for all users (above Level 1) to rate answers.

Thus, it's a perfectly legitimate use of thumbs to click a down thumb just to register your disagreement with the answer.

Depending on the type of question and answer, you can click a down thumb to say it's incorrect, or bad advice, or just that you didn't like that answer.

So, no, it isn't mean; it's just what they're there for.

I gather there are people who go around thumbing everyone else down, which is just dumb, but using them to rate answers is legitimate.

If you want to see all answers (hidden by default by a filter), choose All Answers from the menu next to the word Show: above the answers.

BTW, each person can click 1 thumb per answer, so what you were seeing was not 1 person giving an answer several thumbs down, but several people each giving one thumb down.

That gives you an idea of how many people didn't agree -- or did agree, in the case of thumbs up.

I often click several thumbs while I'm reading answers; then, if I don't have anything to add to what was said, I've registered my opinion and I move on.

Someone said she went back and would give everyone a "thumbs down" so her answer would get picked as "best answer".

It was her strategy to rack up points.

People have different opinions. When it comes to something that you think is a good answer, someone else may think differently

I don't see it as being a big deal at all, it's not like it affects your status or points.

I think a lot of the time it's some bored, punk kid who goes around giving every answer they read a thumbs down just to be a dick.

i give up ,,when i like an answer,,down isnt much of a style unless the answer is totally losing it,.,

i give a thumbs down for a couple reasons -

The answer is WRONG

or their answer is religious, and i just hate people who go on about god this god that god this god that, they piss me off, so i give them all thumbs down because obviously they cant answer a question using their own heads, they have to answer it with the bible, and thats not what im here to read.

most people give a thumbs down because they dont like your opinion, just like my giving religious answers a thumbs down, but thats because those people arent answering with their own answers, they are repeating back bible BS. But this place is all about opinions. ive put FACTS up and gotten thumbs down because people didnt like my facts, even tho they were facts that can be proven.

I've never given anyone a thumbs down.
