If I were to get 2 rats, which gender combinations are the most compatible? A male and a male or a female and a female?

Well, it really depends on the rats but, females are half the size as males but twice as energetic, also males are bigger but more laid-back and like to be cuddled more, females do like to have 1 or more playmates to play with, sleep in a heap with, and they groom each other, males too

Hope this helps!

A male/male **or** female/female combination would be best friends for life, especially when they are purchased together, from the same cage, at the same time.

Which sex you choose to keep as pets is entirely up to you. Females are energetic for their entire lives, an affectionate quick groom of your fingers and they're off again. The males turn into mushy lap rats, become laid back and remind me of the old hound dog laying on the porch.

If you get them together (like a pair of brothers or sisters), either gender should be fine. Our rescue boys are brothers about 1.5 years old now & have always been great with each other. We've had several girls @ a time due to an accidental litter (mom was expecting when we adopted her) & of course they were a big happy family (the one boy baby had to be removed to his own cage of course). Now we have unrelated girls who are total best friends, but there was usually a space of a couple weeks before the new kid was accepted, so we had to put 2 cages side-by-side until everyone calmed down.

Generally females get on better as they are less territorial. But if you get two males who are already bonded then they should get on well also.

it would depend on what kind of personalities you want in your rats. if you want them to be content to cuddle in your lap get two males and if you want them to explore and play more get two females. there are exceptions to that. a friend of mine had a female that wouln't leave her lap and i have a boy who likes to explore.

A male and a male would be better..Females will fight alot and to the death. but it would reall be best if you got 2 seperate cages
