Probably for the same reason that many atheists talk down to Christians (or theists in general). It is human nature- self pride and conceit. When one feels they know everything (whatever their religious beliefs) they tend to act smug and condescending.
Christians shouldn't act in this manner, since they are called to be humble and loving when they share the truth. But eventually man's fallen nature gets the best of even the best of us.

First of all I do think that happens sometimes. I think the main difference is "religious" vs "spiritual" - Religious meaning that when a person thinks they are spiritual but are not. They are usually condesending, hypocritical types and so that is felt by the person they are talking to or trying to "help". The spiritual type is the one that I seek to be like. I think this is the nature of God. Whenever I have heard from Him, it has always been in a spirit of kindness and love. Even if the answer was something I didn't like, the way it came to me made it easy to swallow. That is how sometimes I judge wether a person is being used in my life by God or not. If they come with a hypocritical or harsh spirit I just toss it out. I hope that helped a little.

Many of us have not learned how to be a Christian, and that is mainly because we have been taught by people who have not learned how to be a Christian. Some of us will break loose of that path. These are the ones who fallow the leading of the Holy Spirit. This equals about 20% of the whole.
Man is bassicly self centered. If we are not taught how to become God centered, we remain self centered, and as self centered we think ourselves better than those around us, but ad God centered, we want only to help.

That is a valid question; almost all of the most enchant faiths of time save for Judaism does not believe in the “divine” conceptuality, should we deny our human heritage for faiths which barely stood for 2000 years or so? People are different, same goes to religion; if we are to live together in this planet we should think outside the box and accept the other that is not like us.

Why do people continually assume because one or some do it all do. Not all people that believe in God talk down to others. Just like not all atheists wear black and walk around in a delusional state. Everyone is a lot and it is quit rare that you can label everyone the same way!
I don't talk down to others because I am a Christian, if I do talk down to others it is because I am human and I too make mistakes.

Because they are using religion to prop up thier otherwise fragile sense of self-worth. Being artificially supported, it tends to make these types of people arrogant and self-righteous. It is a proactive defense mechanism whereby they are asserting thier correctness before you can question them about what they themselves percieve to be thier own weaknesses - e.g. thier 'faith' in something that can never be disproven.
btw, please don't assume I am bashing all religious people. Only the self-righteous. Truly religious people have a personal relationship with God that has nothing to do with anyone else.
Alphatoodles - "the non-christian has inner guilt feelings that cause this inferiority 'talked-down-to' feeling". How would you know, hun? Either you are Christian and you have no idea what your talking about, or your speaking from experience and revealing your own feelings. Which is it? Maybe both, hmmm?

because, they think they're right and everyone else is wrong. There is some nice people that believe in God, but the other ones get really defensive when you just bring up the idea of another possibility.

People who believe in God have an inferiority complex that can be compared to the complex men have with strong women. They act aggressive and hostile towards those people they feel threatened by no so much as to intimidate them but to reinforce their own sense of security in their position.
I will ring your doorbell and run away!!!

If someone loves God and "truly' believe in the Lord....they would not talk down to you.
Please do ot catagorize all people who "believe" in God. If someone is going to preach the gospel/spread Gods word, we are to tell it the way Jesus would.....with love and compassion and truth.
If that person chooses not to believe, you don't contiue to try to convince them. You walk away, but keep them in your prayers.

They think they have an all-powerful magical man on their side, and they think this magical man makes all of the rules. They also believe that this magical man, who is perfectly moral, wants the rest of us to be tortured for all eternity, so they must think we're pretty bad people in order to deserve that.
