I've seen some .10 gage shotguns. Not sure if they make them anymore.
The most common and powerful is the standard .12 gage.
Much depends on what kind of shot you use as for inflicting damage. The larger the shot, the more damage caused. Deer slugs inflict an incredible amount of damage. The larger shot and slugs travel at a slower rate.

Technically speaking in a modern round the "strongest" is the 10 guage and yes they are still made. Historically speaking, the largest were the "punt" guns used for hunting ducks. They were black powder weapons and were mounted to the front of a small skiff. When the ducks landed you simply fired into the middle and had yourself many ducks in the larder. These weapons were as large as 4 gauge (frikkin huge) and could be loaded with virtually anything to include nuts, bolts, glass, rocks, whatever the hell you had laying round would work.
Obviously not good for home defense.....

Have you ever heard of as punt gun? In the Chesapeake bay/tidewater region, they used to hunt ducks with a huge shotgun mounted on the front of a small boat, or punt. Since these guns were built in the days of black powder, they didn't have a gauge, but if I had to hazzard a guess, it would be a 2!

Get a Remington 870 with a slug barrel and a ventilated rib barrel, they handle well and are durable, the mossberg is good, but the 870 seems better all around

Strong relating to firearms means the strength, weight and integrity of the chamber and it;s ability to fire high powered rounds.
I suspect you want to know about power, not strength. Read this very good article on shotguns in Wikipedia....
