You're going to have to get him a new house when he finishes with this one. For reasons he's not sharing, it is his preferred chew of the moment. If you're worried the house may make him sick, probably not. Most are made with the gerbil's desire to chew in mind. Maybe the pet store has a kind that can't be chewed up??

He will chew on the house no matter what, but there is one product I've found that my gerbils always preferred to chew instead of the house. They are called "mini stick munchies" and you get them in a four pack for 88cents at Wal-mart. It is the only commerical chew my gerbils ever chewed on. Also, you can throw some toilet paper/paper towel tubes into the cage for good measure. That should slow down the house destruction process. (Eventually, though, you will need another one. I always try to keep two or three on hand just in case)

Have you tried giving him food to gnaw on? Hard stuff, like carrots, little gerbil food pellets, anything that smells and tastes good might entice him to not chew on his house. I know that my dogs won't chew on the plastic chew toys one can buy, but they love rawhide bones and stuff like that, and it keeps them from chewing the furniture.

Give him lots of grass hay (good quality) to chew on. He is suppose to eat a high-cellulose diet. In spite of that you will find that he is chewing on other things too. Part of that is boredom. But if he is chewing for his food, it will cut down on that behavior. Remember in the wild they are chewing grassy plants/seeds all day long. They have to look for food constantly to survive.

hahahaha i am answering one of your questions!!!!!!!

OK, well, the house was made for him to chew on. That is why it is made of wood. What Sammy does is chews on the walls and makes him own doors and then he fills it with fluff and then sleeps on it first. you just got it, so give him time to chew it and explore and let him decide if its food or a bed. =)

you can't train a gerbil to not chew. be careful, though. some things that are sold for gnawing animals are not safe for them.
