omg...i am going to cry...good luck..i am so sorry for your situation! i have heard that it is technically illegal to intentionally kill an animal at a residence...but anyways...im sry i just cant think of anything other than an overdose of pain killers or tranquilizers...cause to picture that kitten suffering from anything sudden, or painful is too much for me to bear.

It's an entirely personal decision, but my suggestion would be to let them go with you. A lot of times children don't understand exactly how animals are put to sleep. Some have very horrifying ideas of what happens. If your children are with you, they can see exactly what happens and usually the vet or vet tech will explain things if you ask them to. This way the kids will understand that their kitten isn't in pain when they're put down. They can say goodbye and help comfort her as she passes away. I know it's an emotional time, but this could be a valuable teaching experience for your and your children. If your family is religious I might suggest a little memorial at home, as I know that really helped my nephews (ages 7 and 5). Good luck to you. I know how hard it is to lose a pet, and you and your family will be in my thoughts.

Ilive on a ranch and the best way to put an animal who is sick down is to shoot it. I know people are going to have a fit over this but if you dont want to go to the vet its the most humane way,
for those crying its just a baby and it will get better no it wont its got a birth defect and has no quality of life for god sakes it paralyzed you cant ask a creature who wouldnt naturally servive in the wild becuse of its disablity to keep living for your own pathetic attemps to stop your guilt..
hun i would either take it to the vet or shoot it put the poor thing out of it misery

I cannot give any advice that would make this matter any more easy or comfortable. I don't know if it is something you would want to do, because the guilt you feel afterwards might be too overwhelming. I had a 16 year old cat. She became very ill quite suddenly. The doctor kept telling me to put her out of her misery but I could not do that and not at the hands of a stranger. I took her back home, laid her on my bed, and let her die comfortably, even if it took longer than it would if she was put down. This is not an easy thing for you. I do wish you all the best.

Even though you are both nurses, I recommend you not contemplate doing an at-home euthanasia yourself. For one thing, generally it requires a massive overdose of anesthetic by vein, and I am not sure about the ethical and legal aspects of that.
Nor is it easy. A kitten's veins are tiny, and it takes a great deal of skill and training for the vet and an experienced assistant to hit the vein on the first try.
The alternative methods you might try, such as asphyxiation, are just as upsetting to think about.
I really recommend you have a vet put the cat to sleep, either at his clinic or by arranging a home visit.

Some vets still make house calls. See if you can get a local vet to bring the anesthesia to your home. That way, you can have the comfort of an at home passing, but the knowledge that it will be done correctly and humanely by a vet.

Putting an animal to sleep in any other fashion than a vet doing it is considered animal cruelty and you putting it on an open forum opened doors you probably didn't intend too.
Gee i wonder how a hypoglycemic feels when they go into a coma and pass, from too much insulin in the body...
just wondering if you could tell me since you were a nurse

I would just bring it in to the vet. I don't think you would have the recourses at home to properly put it to sleep in a humane way. I am sorry about your kitten and I hope the kitten goes to a better place.

I don't think that's something you should do at home. Not to say that you aren't capable, I just think that would be really hard to have to put your own cat down. I think you should just have the vet do it. Request to be in the room when they do it, maybe they'll let you go in to be with her. I'm sure there are laws against doing that at home anyway, it's just not a good idea.

When my mom had to put our kitten to sleep, she took it to the vet. She was in the room the whole time and she was able to take him home and bury him. It also didn't cost a thing. If I were you, I would still have the vet do it since they are the experts.

I work in healthcare also, but that doesn't make me qualified to put a kitten to sleep. Why don't you want to take it to the vet? I've had to put down a few of my dogs ... and although traumatic, it's humane. The first injection puts the animal to sleep (as if it were having surgery). After the animal is resting, the second injection is given allowing the animal to pass.
