Faith shouldn't be founded on a fear of punishment. That's the problem with a lot of churches, with their hellfire and brimstone preaching. It makes God look horrible. If you want to be religious, you should worship a God that is loving and good. Some religions, even some branches of Christianity, don't teach that way. You would probably be much happier going to one of them and hearing positive messages.

In my opinion, any god who would "punish" one or turn one away from the pearly gates of heaven just because they never worshiped him or accepted jesus as their savior is no good god at all and is nothing i want a part of... organized religion was created by man to keep the average joe scared, and in their control because human nature is to question life and the meaning of it, where we go when we die and so on. Believe what your heart feels is true and have faith in yourself, you know in your heart what is good and right, as long as you stay true to yourself any god who turns you away is not your father.

Even though I am a non-believer you should not pick a religion simply because you are forced into or told to pick it.
Choose one that makes you happy.
See this is one of the few reason why religion does not appeal to me. People telling other people what religion they have to pick

There are more issues at hand in finding the right thing to believe. If we harm ourself we harm the God that loves us heart and soul. We are not punished for our sins-that is simply reaping what we sowed=plant good things and get good things to grow or Plant bad and get bad i.e. weeds.
what helped me as born a Jew to get the right faith/trust=Christian means a follower of the Messiah-who came as a Jew- the believer in Jesus-has power over the mind to control their thoughts, thus when Jesus says to forgive and let Me handle it, or about lust is adultry against God, or hate is murder in the heart, we have the calling to cast down all imaginations that exault themselves against God which brings true peace and joy to our heart in all situations (Philippians 4:4-20).
My Jewish people believe in the comming of a Messiah, and his fulfillment is in Jesus. The laws of Judaism were given specifically to the Jewish people to be kept and to guide them to the promised Messiah.
Isaiah 9:6 the child to be the Son given, the mighty God and the prince of peace..
Isaiah 52:13-53:12 To be the exalted one. To first be marred more than any man, and to lay down his life to make atonement for our sins.
The way I came to know him is by believing what he spoke to us from heaven (Revelation1:1 chapter 1 verse 1 & 3:19&20 "I love you and ask you to repent of your sins (even one lie) quickly. Behold I stand at your heart door and knock If you hear my word and open the door, I will come in and be your friend."
so I prayed "Jesus I am sorry for my sins, come into my heart and help me, be my friend, amen."
Its all good and now as a Jew who has come to know Jesus is my Messiah, savior, and best friend giving me joy beyond words and power to live right.
have a great day, David chose wisely -no choice is a choice who else ever died for your sins (even if you only admit to one lie, or to denial of ever hurting anyone) and offers you the joy of salvation and inner peace till heaven forever.

Welcome to life in general.
You may be a good person, but if you dont do exactly as the big boys tell you, you'll go in jail, be in debt, be alone, homeless.... etc
That's life and religion... at least with religion you get a choice to go tell the other believers to go ______ (insert appropriate word) themselves. No one should force to you do anything.

Stray away from "religion." Dive into spirituality. Become a spiritual person. That is a journey within yourself.
