...what challenges will US military commanders on the ground in Iraq (General Petraeus) and other generals face from the politicians in Washington?

On the flip side--if the next President was a Republican, do you think that would affect the outcome of the War in Iraq and to what extent with the Democrats in charge of Congress.

The primary challenge that Democrats will place before the commanders is to orchestrate a withdrawal of forces. Once the decision is made to withdraw (and it WILL be made), it's a very tough balancing act to move things and people out of the country and still provide adequate security for the troops that are still there awaiting their turn to go. They want to avoid the Viet-Nam scenario where the last people to go were being fired upon at the time. And there is a chance that we will leave some troops behind as trainers and advisers, though I doubt they will stay for very long.

Whether the next President is a Democrat or a Republican, the challenge will be the same. Citizens are demanding that the US pull out most or all of the troops. The trick will be to do this without leaving absolute chaos in their wake, and leaving a void that will be filled by Iran, Syria and other nearby nations that do not have US interests at heart.

Maybe then their hands wont be tied by our Power Hungry President, Vice President and Cabinet.
The military is ruled by out leaders. They can only perform their best if they get our leaders to allow them to make decisions that are prudent for this country. They can not complain and they can only press on. The highest military official of our Land is our President. If he is not savy enough or intelligent enough to keep peace and end a war, the Commanding Leaders are all at a stand-still. They are doing their best in a time where they have little authority. That is the problem with RULERS. They want to rule at all costs.

If the next US President is a Democrat, I hope (s)he will do something constructive about this problem we're having in Iraq; preferaably, a solution. Enough is enough is enough.

The troops will be told not to carry guns or shoot back and they will ask the aircraft to leave the area because there is to much chance for collateral damage when you drop a bomb.
