Chianti, like Chianti Classico are regions within Italy. They lie inside Tuscany. The wines of Chianti that are DOCG are all primarily made from the Sangiovese grape. Wines made with Sangiovese are usually medium bodied, moderate to high tannin and balanced acidity. They usually have aromas combining dark cherry, black plum, and slightly earthy notes.

A Merlot is typically lighter in color, more red cherry or red berry in aroma, and medium bodied (although some can be as heavy as a cabernet sauvignon). Both Chianti and Merlot are dry (no sugar left after fermentation), but neither is heavily astringent (mouth drying). White zin has more strawberry sort of flavors and a great deal of residual sugar making them taste sweet. They do not have any appreciable tannin, so they don't make your mouth feel dry.

Chiantis are excellent with any red sauced food, barbque, or roasted meat. Merlots are great with roast beef, duck, and les spicy foods.

Chianti is a wine producing region in Tuscany, Italy. It is a usually a blend of grapes Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Trebbiano & Malvasia. I think of Chianti as juicy red fruit flavors, like cherry, with some spice, and quite often an earthy or rustic characteristic. I do not feel that Chianti is comparable to Merlot. Merlot is so much deeper and complex. White Zinfandel also isn't comparable because its usually known for its rose color and slight sweetness.

chianti would be more similar to a merlot than a white zin. White zin bears no similarity to any other red wines, except for the fact that it comes from the red zinfandel grape. beyond that it is nothing like red wine. White Zin is very fruity, very sweet and syrupy tasting. Think strawberries and cream.

Chianti is a lighter bodied red wine that can be very fruity, but not usually sweet. one thing about chianti is that it is a blend of 3 - 5 different italian red grapes. So the individual grapes could change the taste of the wine. And depending on who makes it can be very dry (as opposed to sweet). Its primary wine grape is actually the sangiovese grape which lends a tart black cherry type flavor to the wine.

It is from a region of Italy, I believe in or near Tuscany. It can only be called Chianti if made under very specific guidelines. The main grape used to make it is Sangiovese. I don't consider white zinfandel to be an actual wine- more of a wine cooler. However, by comparison, it is much drier(less sweet) and somewhat heavier bodied. I don't remember the last time I had a white zin, but I imagine them to be very sweet and fruity and light. A Chianti often shows strawberry notes and a bit of earthiness with quite a bit of acidity. Merlot on the other hand, is typically heavier than Chianti and and can be much drier and have more tannins. Merlots often taste of chocolate, ripe berries such as strawberry, and leather or tobacco.

Chianti is typically fruity. Its the same grape as a sangiovese, just a different growing area. For a great Chianti I recommend Tiziano. Its a 89+ rated wine for a small price!

As compared to the merlot and zin, you'll have a darker, richer color than the merlot, adding many many complex layers of taste. In my experience, Chianti's finish wonderfully! But don't go in expecting the sweetness of the white zin...

I had this wine at a winery in Southern Indiana and its got a nice sweet taste to it that in my opinion is better then our wines made here in the U.S.. My favorite Chianti is the Chianti Classico because its not as full bodied as most other wines. You really have to experience it yourself and see what you personally think. Everybody is different and whats good for you might not be for me. Try it out some time. Here is a website I found that should help you out.

Chianti's a red wine... it's a lil sweeter than a merlot (I believe) but definitely drier than a white zinfandel.


Chianti's go well with grilled meats and pasta.

merlots are more smooth & velvety, white zin is just bland & fruity. chianti is medium to full bodied, with earthy, slightly peppery overtones. try chianti classico by ruffino, castello banfi, or villa antinori. chianti comes from the chianti region in tuscany, italy, the predominant grape is sangiovese.
