There really is no good answer to this because every child is different. I would take into account your child's age, maturity level, and the type of community you live in. Also consider just how responsible your child is with other tasks that you give him/her.
Personally, I was left home alone for more than a couple hours when I was 12. I was a mile down the road from my Grandma in case anything happened, I knew 99% of the people that went past my house (we lived in the country), and I knew to be safe (didn't use the stove, if someone asked where my dad was, I told them sleeping and come back later, etc.).

It really depends on the child I am a Mother of 5 and I think at least 12 years old for the more mature children others never need to be left alone

I would say 12 or 13, but it all depends on the kid. I was 11 when I was left home alone all day to babysit my 9 year old sister and 3 year old stepsister. But I would never leave my kids home alone at that age!

Some US States have different ages. So you have to check with Child Services in your area. In Canada its not up to each province> Canadian law says age 12 for short periods of time providing on the maturity fo the child.

When they are old enough to follow all of the rules. No stove. No parties. Lock the door. Don't leave, don't let anyone in....
I would say a mature 12 year old could handle a few hours after school. As long as there is no cooking involved and a locked front door.

I'd say a reasonable age would be 11 up or if your state calls anyone under 13 alone child endangerment then just start at 13 or whatever age.

My parents have trusted me to be at home since Year 6/5th grade after school from 4-6. Previously I had a babysitter.
I'm 14 and the longest my parents have left me at home is about 10 hours or so, when they went to a friend's anniversary party.

16 years or older, if they are left home alone.
Before this age, they are too fragile to be left alone. You may not need a "babysitter", although someone to keep the child company should be there.

At think around 12-13. But it depends also in the maturity of your child.
