it's both. I think that after you run around so much your body starts to shut down and with that goes your brain. I also believe that just plain thinking a lot and stressing out a lot can also mentally exhaust you too.

I suffer from verbal abuse from my biatch of a boss. I am now desperately looking for a new job.
WHen I come home from work, I feel so exhausted. Not from the work itself but from my boss. She is the worst person I've ever met. I feel depleted and run down both physically and mentally. Sometimes I cry and let it out soon as I get home. One time I had a panic attack at work. I cant wait to leave. A person and the human body can only take so much before it shuts down mentally. And you can become physically sick.

Mental exhaustion is something I, myself, deal with.
I used to go and go and go through days with plenty of energy. But, when I had an auto accident all that changed. I was also dealing with other stresses in my life at the time, and depression. This is how the psychologist explained my situation:
We each have a certain amount of energy for each given day.
Some people with lower stress can sail right through.
Others of us who have to deal with our own depression, or family problems and responsibilities, or health issues, have already "spent" a considerable amount of our daily energy just trying to be as "normal" as we can -- that leaves us with less energy to work with for the rest of the day.
Physical or psychological? I don't think the source of stress really matters. Good stress, bad stress, physical stress, emotional, fear and worry, anxiousness, guilt, physical illness....you only have so much energy to get you through a single day.

When I suffered from depression I was mentally exhausted all of the time. I continually obsessed about my feelings of worthlessness and life in general. I was unable to focus on the things I used to enjoy doing. I slept most days and paced most nights. My story can be found on Yahoo search under "The Last Temptation of George Petrie". You can read about my downward spiral. Fortunately I got treatment for my depression and am stronger today than I have ever been. best wishes

I am almost always mentally and physically exhausted. I believe they are connected; when the mind is tired, anxious, or just filled up it tires out the body. The two feed off each other.
