Meaning Of The Word Abuse

It's only very recently that verbal abuse was even considered as abuse at all. As children, we chanted the "sticks and stones," rhyme. But scholars knew about the power of words, cf. "the pen is mightier than the sword." Verbal abuse is a criminal act. For example, insulting and swearing at a spouse is considered grounds for divorce, and doing it to a child has been considered grounds for taking the child away from its parents. This doesn't mean if your mom says something you don't like, you can have her arrested!!

the word "abuse" per se is different from insult. check out the dictionary and see for yourself if you can equate abuse with insult. somebody once said, " a man can think no deeper than his vocabulary will allow him to. One cannot drink from an empty well."

but then again, insulting and swearing CAN BE FORMS of abuse.

Yes, when you abuse someone verbally you speak rudely and harshly and may well call that person by some bad names. It is important to understand the difference between verbal abuse and physical abuse, although very often they go together.

They can mean the same, but as a general rule, abuse would be mostly physical and insult would be mostly verbal.
