Because ppl like Aleema D have NO IDEA what it's like to be a part of it. and believe every bad thing they hear....
oh and BTW Aleema D: thank you SO very much for calling what my husband does for his country over-rated...I'm sure he'll appreciate that.
considering what he sacrifices and all to serve his country i would HOPE that you would be grateful to him and ppl like him that serve for their country so YOU can sit on your butt all day and answer questions.
i don't know about you but...missing the hell out of my hubby while he's gone, taking care of my kids by myself while pregnant is a far cry from "over-rated" sweetheart.
i wish for peace just as much as the next person...but you need to face the facts that there ARE bad ppl in this world like it or not, and if we aren't protecting ourselves...who the heck will? you sure won't.

No no. You have it wrong. The military doesn't brainwash PEOPLE, they brainwash SOLDIERS!
See, the entire purpose of bootcamp (whatever the particular branch calls it) is to destroy whatever individuality the recruit may have developed in his feral state and to remold him into the effective component part of the military machine. That is the major function of the basic training, along with instilling a minimal knowledge of equipment and a minimal physical conditioning.
It is absolutely necessary as no sane individual in his right mind would venture into the conditions under which soldiers and sailors work without being "educated" in the proper motivation. Having one's face or leg or arm blown off so that some Iraqi who would rather you were dead can sell his vote to the richest warlord is not what we call "sane" in the adult world. Yet, that is what these kids have to do, day in and night out.
There is nothing covert about this process. The military proudly demonstrates their techniques to the media. This is a methodology that has been developed for four to five thousand years (since long before Thermopylae, anyway), and they are darn good at it.
Perhaps you object to the term "brainwashing"? Try "conditioning" or "stimulus/response training" or some other euphemism, if it makes you feel nice and fuzzy. But somehow, they must take these boys with native and unschooled love of existence and train them to function as a team, an effective team, a lethal team.
Best part is, the military won't care; they'll just keep on turning Hairy Mike Civilian in to Cleancut Joe Soldier, as they have been doing since Suzy Rottencrotch was a toddler.

What it comes down to is they don't understand what could motivate a person to serve in the Armed Forces. If someone ask me why I served I give them all the reasons, and someone inevitably says, "You sound brainwashed!"
WHAT!?! Why? Because I was glad to get a gauranteed check every two weeks? Because I was glad to have a gauranteed roof over my head, and free food to eat? Because I got a free college education and free medical attention!?!? I mean, if that's being brainwashed then I guess I was! LOL.
But it was well worth it.

When an organization determines, when you do what, how you think, what you say, what's acceptable and what's not, it provides all the answers for you in terms of how often you see family, what does recreation involve, what is good food, what you should value in what order (God, country, family), who our enemies are and who our friends are - you don't ever have to figure out these tough issues in life for yourself - then you're brainwashed, i.e., indoctrinated into a set of beliefs and values that serve the purposes of a larger group or organization. OR according to Webster's persuasion by propaganda or salesmanship. If you don't see anything wrong with that belief system, then it doesn't matter if you're brainwashed or 'patriotic', does it?

This is the only explanation their tiny minds can determine to explain why the military system works so well when compared to their attempts to enforce a military type system on the public.

If by brainwash you mean teaching core values such as honor, courage and commitment and then holding people accountable to them...then I guess the military does.

Because they experimented with it extensively in the 60's and 70's. They used LSD and other hallucenigens in an attempt to find a way to "mind control " volunteers from the army. There are some who say they have had some level of success. See the movie " The Manchurian Candidate " for a glimpse at what they were shooting for.

Military makes soldiers think they`re invincible. The miltitary do their best to change the soldiers mindsets. Truth is they`re still made of skin & bone & are as vulnerable as before they enlisted.

Because some people cannot conceptualize a person being willing to risk life and limb to protect their fellow countrymen, especially when the protected are so ungrateful.

Because they're ungrateful little punks who don't deserve to be protected.
But of course they are nonetheless. Just like they always have been.
