Who are these people who make up figures claiming that a majority of Americans are Christian, and why aren't they arrested for lying to the public?

Yeah....this ain't a good sample. It is somewhere around 10%. I've seen as low as 3% and as high as 17% in different surveys. But we aren't anywhere close to a majority, yet.

Well you see sometimes you can't judge an entire nation on the small knot of people that surrounds you. I've made that mistake before... I live in a very liberal state so after a while you start to assume that EVERYONE is like that. Mistake.
PS I think it's more rational to say that there are more agnostics than hardcore atheists. This is just my own observation.

Well, a lot of atheists have this need to go around a shout "Look at me! I don't believe! Isn't that great! You're stupid if you do believe!"
Most believers aren't that vocal. It doen't make us special to believe as most of the people on the planet believe.
I just wish I understood why atheists have to hate and mock beilevers. I couldn't give a rat's a$$ what you do or don't believe in.

Unfortunately i read a question using similar figures. I Googled it, and as of 2001 approximately 85% of Americans say they are Christian. Very disturbing.

Yahoo R/S is not representative of the population as a whole. People on the internet tend to be literate and technologically savvy, and those sorts of people tend to skew atheist.
However, I do not think America is as religious as the census implies. Many people report as religious despite not being serious about religion, and others pretend to be religious to avoid persecution.
