A couple weeks ago I took my cat in due to swollen, red, inflamed eyes with lots of green goop discharge. The vet diagnosed him with a URI, but only in his eyes. She said it was either herpes or one other name. (can't remember) She gave him two different antibiotic ointments to go in his eyes twice a day. I did that, but he still isn't well. Some days his eyes will be normal, then the next day he will wake up and they will be inflamed. I'm concerned that the infection might have gotten in his bloodstream. Does this sound common? I'm so worried about him. I plan to make another vet visit, so you don't have to tell me that.. but has anything heard or seen anything like this? I'm so concerned!

FYI- He isn't active like he normally is. He is still eating/drinking and using the litterbox.

Thanks!

i think you should ask the vet for an oral antibiotic because it sounds as if the infection is past just the eyes...i think he would be fine if you did this...ps, you really dont need to make another vet visit i would just call and let them know the infection hasnt cleared and would they please prescribe an oral antibiotic

Ok dear.. Here you go..trust me I tried it & it worked...
You need to get your hands on Golden Seal herbal tea--plain Golden Seal -- no blends... Make a cup & let it cool... then I took cotton wipes (use something sterile) and dip it in the tea.. squeeze a drop or so into the cats eyes (you might need help holding the cat) then lightly wipe as much goo from the eyes as possible.. I did this for 3-4 days for 4 kittens (farm cats) and they cleared up w/ NO reoccurrence.. Golden seal helps w/ the infection & inflammation.. one kitten had never had his eyes fully open since he was born-- so he is now wide eyed and rip roaring around the yard! ..
**note** do not dip into the tea once the cloth has touched the eyes.. If you do this- you can refrigerate the tea to use for the duration of the treatment- (always let it come to room temp before use)

It['s always possible for an eye infection to get in the bloodstream, or just for the disease to progress into the body if it is hard to treat. You are doing the right thing by taking him back. Sometimes medicine treatments have to be adjusted, or he may even just be pooped from fighting his existing infection. Good luck and I hope he gets better soon!

Poor kitty cat! There's not much in a cat's anatomy, from what I've read, that would hold ANY infections back. They have antibodies like we do, but it sounds like this is far too severe for them to handle. So yes, I do believe your cat can get an infection from the eyes. Humans can, and most mammilian head anatomy, from what I've seen and learned back in biology class in high school, is similar to each other.
