I just need to know what I can do to help his diarrhea, it is keeping both of us up all night. He has to go outside like every 30 minutes to potty. And only potty's a little bit, and its really really runny diarrhea. I think it is just because of a change in puppy food from what the breeder was feeding him. They told us it was likely that he would get diarrhea. And that it would last about a week or so, but is there anything I can give him or do to help with it? Also... he eats dirt and dead leaves out in our yard, and sometimes plants, but not a whole lot. Could this be part of it? How do we keep him from doing that?

It could be attributed to the change of food. That is very common. However, it is important to know if your puppy has been treated for worms. If it hasn't, go to your local vet and buy some wormer from them. They will sell it to you over the counter (you won't have to pay for a vet visit). It should cost between 6 and 10 dollars on the average. After the treatment, diarrhea should cease within 3 to 5 days. Good luck!

You are right it is most likely the food change
puppies and some breeds of dogs are sensitive to food changes.
it is recommend that when you are going to change a dogs food to do the following
get the new food before you run out of the old food
start to give him the new food a little at a time
when you feed him feed him 75% of the old stuff and 25% of the new stuff do this for a couple of days and slowly add more and more of the new and less and less of the old
as for what to give him
pepto give him the amount as what you would for a babie person. My dog went though the same thing and this is what my vet told me to do.
use a dropper and put it at the back of his mouth
you may have some trouble
my dog hates the taste so I have to close his mouth fast and hold it shut or he will keep his mouth open and shake his head and it gets every where
you can repeat this every 4 hours
please note that the pepto will turn his poop black so in a little bit if it is black do not worry.
if this does not work you are going to have to take him to the vets some times when they get the runns their bowels can get inflamed and they need to get a shot of medicine from the vet to calm it down.
Because it is a food change that has done this you should contineu to give him the same food. It should clear up in a couple of days.
You could give him a bland diet of hambuger and white rice.
for a couple of days
fry the hambuger once it is done run hot water though it to take out all of the fat
when you make the rice do not add salt or butter
after he is better you will have to start him on his solid food slowly or this will happen again.
so still give him the meat and rice and mix a little of the dry with it and every couple of days add a little more.
the hambuger diet is not good enough to feed him long term but it is great when they are sick.
again his vet told me to do this

It would have been easier to slowly change over the food instead of abruptly changing it. If the diarrhea lasts too long the puppy could become dangerously dehydrated. A trip to the vet for medication to help might be in order. They can also check that they diarrhea is not from something else altogether.

Sounds like worms (normal in puppies) - the vet has to give a wormer. As for food, use boiled hamburger (ground beef) and rice. The boiling removes most of the fat and the rice is a starch. Your puppy will love it.
Puppies are like little kids they explore the world with their mouth, tasting everything. Keep a watchful eye and NEVER hit your little one. Remove the object from their mouth and say no. Make sure you get into puppy school, there you will learn how to raise a happy healthy dog.
Be patience and loving. What you put in to this relationship is what you'll get out of it.

it is not OK to allow a puppy to have diarrhoea for a week. i cant believe the breeder informed you of this in such a chilled manner. it is irresponsible on there part for not telling you how to change the diet and disgusting that they made it seem normal for a puppy to have diarrhoea that long. dehydration is a worry if continues. the food should of been changed gradually over a few days. i would strongly recommend a vet check in case of dehydration , worms, viruses etc.
do not worm during a bout of diarrhoea this can make it worse!!!!!

Parvo, coccidia, giradia, and worms are all sirous issues that can cause this. I dont belive parvo is an issue as your dog would already be dead.
Most puppies come home with coccidia and worms even though the breeder said they wormed them, its hard not to have puppies get coccidia as they like to eat sibling poo and thats how they get it. You need to take the baby to the vet asap. any of the above can kill a pup. What color are the gums on the dog, if they are whitish you need to go NOW!

He is eating the plants and things because his stomach is upset. Have you checked his stool to see if there are any worms? You may want your vet to check him to make sure there isnt an underlying problem. Puppies can dehydrate very quickly so dont wait long. Macaroni and cheese will help slow it down until you can see your vet.

Feed the puppy a combination of cooked rice, boiled chicken breast (skinless, boneless, no fat), and plain yogurt with active cultures.
Once he has returned to having solid stool, transition him back to his dog food by combining the dog food with the rice. Add less rice little by little until he is only eating dog food.
Also is possible , keep him from eating any foreign items.
Good Luck!

Always vet first, but...
We just bought a dog food that is salmon-based for sensitive stomachs.
It was either Pro Plan or Purina One - I'm at work, and can't read the bag, but it's maroon with pink labeling.
