God bless you!
Arriving to work 10 or 15 minutes before start time is one of the most responsible habits you can adopt, for two reasons; (1) By arriving early to work, you are not obligated to "begin" working, but arriving gives you the time to absorb the situation, the amount of work, the surroundings and the goal for that day's work. It gives you time to visualize what you need to do before you begin. This is one thing that you cannot do when you show up at 4:59, there is no time to plan your work - or - to work you plan!
(2) When you arrive early, you set the pace for acceleration by starting at a normal pace, WITH a clear head. whenever you arrive at the last minute, your mind is racing to get you there....even though you are ALREADY there, you are still racing. Isn't that silly? why rush? Can't you just leave 10 minutes sooner?
So, arriving early gives you a clear head for thinking and a clear vision for planning our your work and goals for the day! The reward for this little gesture of responsibility....your co-workers and your management team will take you more serious and accept you as responsible and mature about your job. Only an employee who is responsible and mature receives bonuses or gets promoted to management.

I don't know if that is an actual "rule". I would guess that it also depends on what type of job you have... like a person who has scheduled appoinments and clients might show up to work a little early, maybe 10-15 min, to get settled and ready for the day. But someone who works in sales at a store or something maybe doesn't have to show up early just on time since they don't really have to do much to get ready to work. I hope this helps and it's just my opinion.. but there's nothing wrong with anyone showing up a little early.

You should be on time and ready to start your shift as schedule. It is ok to be 10 minutes early, but some Companies won't allow you to clock in 10 minutes early. I'd rather prefer people come in early, then being late. This way you can get your coffee or say hello to your fellow employees.

I always get there early just to care of any little things I might want to do before I start work like having a little breakfast, coffee, using the bathroom and just lounging around even if it's for only 10 minutes. I was always grumpy when I had to go straight to work. I guess it depends on the job and the person. Personally, I need a little "lazy" time before I get started on my work and it ALWAYS looks good in the eyes of your employer. It means that you can be counted on and you will be remembered when it's time for promotions to come around. Mainly, because you'll be there before some of your co-workers and you'll literally be in there sights.

yeah its good to show up 10-15 minutes early for your shift, so that way you're ready. And it gives you time to change into your uniform if you need to, and also... to kinda get in that "work" frame of mind. Some managers like to have shift meetings before the shift actually starts.
Also, if you show up early, it shows you're dedicated to your job. Managers really like that.

I always try to be in at least 10-15 minutes early. That way if I have computer issues or if I need to use the restroom or something like that I can do it with out being on the clock.
Better to be early than late

I'd go with the second - -Just continue not showing up early, and when I get fired, file a complaint with the Labour Board and sue them for wrongful dismissal. This is total Bullsh*t - and I hear that Walmart pulls this kind of crap all the time.

My answer is going to differ from the rest of people, because while I agree that you absolutely should not be late for work, it's entirely up to you if you show up early.
What I think can happen sometimes is if you show up early but aren't "on the clock" (you're getting your coffee, putting makeup on, changing into your work shoes, etc.) is that people assume when they see you in the office that you are on the clock. And they may start expecting you to arrive early, every day, to start working.
While I think it's great that you're being conscientious, be careful that people start taking advantage of your coming in early.

Good idea, but one that I never mastered. I mostly aimed to be there at 5, not 5:01. Point was, 10 minutes a day for which I was not getting paid seemed like a lot to me.
