I am a veterinary technician. My first response is to check with your veterinarian's office, especially if your dog has ever had any past skin problems. Also you will want to check with your vet's office if your dog is on any topical flea/tick prevention. Your vet's office can recommend a shampoo that would work best for your dog. Never use any human shampoo or human soap. These can completely strip the natural oils from your dogs skin and then cause severe itching. This severe itching can lead to an infection which may need to be treated with antibiotics. I had a beagle that was the most spoiled rabbit hunting dog and I bathed him once a month during hunting season and every couple of months during the off season. I used a shampoo made by DVM that was called Hylyt. There is another popular one made by VET Solutions.
Hope this helped.

Do Beagles require a lot of grooming?

Not especially, although ears and feet will require special attention. Beagles have a smooth lying, hard, medium length coat with a finer undercoat. Females will "blow" their coat after each season, and males will "blow" once a year, generally when the weather grows warmer in the spring. A good brushing once or twice a week is usually sufficient to keep your beagle's coat clean and healthy. A bath in warm water when the coat starts to loosen up will hasten the shedding process, and keep your dogs clean too. Otherwise, bathing is rarely necessary, unless your hound has found something smelly to roll in. The beagle's pendulous ears are especially prone to developing infection or ear mites, and will require weekly checks and careful cleaning. Toenails also require regular attention, with frequency of trimming dependent on how well your beagle wears them down during his normal, daily activities.

Grooming the beagle for show ring competition, however, is a whole different story. Current trends include trimming, stripping and sometimes even clippering of the coat to neaten the appearance and create a stylish outline.

Never, if possible. Dogs have a natural way of ridding themselves of dirt. If you bathe a dog enough, you will rid him of the ability.

Dogs have natural oils on their skin, which move through their fur. As the oils move from the skin to the tips of the fur, they pick up any debris (dirt, dander, etc) and move it with the oils... As the oil reaches the tips of the fur it begins to come in more contact with the air, which begins to dry the oils. Then the dried pieces eventually fall from the hair (keep in mind these are pieces too small to be seen by the naked eye.)

So if you bathe the dog, you remove these natural oils which help to keep him clean. Sometimes this causes an over production of oils, since the skin is trying to replace the oil which was removed... or it causes the dogs system to shut down and the dog loses the valuable oils needed for healthy skin and fur.

If your dog is dirty, just rinse/bathe him with water. Don't use soap (this is what removes the oils).

If you ABSOLUTELY feel you must bathe your dog with soap/shampoo... don't do it more frequently than every 6 months.

Good luck.

Any type of hound tends to be a little bit smellier, then some other breeds, how often you bath your dog mainly depends on you and how often you want to do it. Most animals do not require bathing, that is something that we as humans want to do to them or for them but mainly for ourselfs.Unless the get into something really smelly I wouldn't worry to much about it.
I have 4 cats and two dogs ,they smell just fine, I do brush them and do their nails and so on , but would never dream of giving my cats a bath!! They do that and also wash each other. As for my dogs they do like going for a swim, but I don't bath them unless they are smelly.

i bathe my dogs every month and make sure that u use dog shampoo not people stuff because the human shampoo dries out their skin and then they itch like crazy

EDIT: it also depends on the fur. if u have a dog with longer fur u might want to bathe him more often. and brush him once a day. but my dogs both have very short hair and only one sheds really bad but that is because he is part sheltie

Once or twice a month. If you are bathing them twice a month and notice that their skin is drying out cut back to once a month. I have a puppy with dry skin and I use oatmeal and aloe dog shampoo on her and it helps out as well. She gets a bath once a month unless she gets into something really dirty.

I think it is proper to bathe a dog at least once a month. They roll around in dirt and it is just nice to see a nice and clean dog. Just get the proper shampoo and you are set to go. Good Luck and God Bless

I bathe my beagle once a week. They get kinda stinky. I've read other hounds should be bathed 3 times a month.

Depending on where you live, 2-3 times a year. More often in a tropical climate.
