Right-click on the photo in Microsoft Word and choose Format Picture. Click on the Picture tab and under Image control, click on the drop-down arrow at Color. Click on Greyscale rather than Black and White, as this is too dramatic for a photo.

Word does not have the ability to convert a picture to black and white (techincally called "greyscale"). You will need a graphic editor such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop to do that. The Paint program, included with Windows, does not have tha ability.

You might try http://download.com and search for "graphic editor". You will probably find some free ones you can download there.
