CD-R means it's a CD that can be written to once. RW means that it can be written to, deleted and re-written to. These are good for backups (DVD-RWs are better because you can put a lot more data on them).

So, if you have a drive that can handle CD-RW you can copy some data to the CD, then later decide to delete it all or add to it. With CD-Rs once you write to them you can't remove the data off the CD.

The difference between the + and - are just different disk types. They are similar to the Beta and VHS differences. I believe that the + is more popular in most CD players but you PC CD reader should be able to read either version. It may only be able to write to one type or the other though. It should say that in the documentation.

Hope this helps!

Both are types of CD burners and also types of CD disk.

A CD-R can only use CD-R disk. They can be written to once and closed. After that the content of the disk can not be changed. You can not add to it, delete from it, change a file, etc. You write to it once and you are done.

A CD-RW can use CD-R disk for one time writing. But it can also use CD-RW disk. They can be formatted and then used as if they are a gigantic floppy disk. You can put files on, take them off, delete, them, change them, reformat and start all over, etc. The RW stands for ReWritable.

When dealing with CD burners, the "-" and the "+" have no meaning. Different manufacturers use - or +. They do have a meaning when dealing with DVD burners.

The original DVD format was DVD-R. They were designed for holding video and were used in non-computer DVD players. DVD+R was a later format invented for use on computer DVD players/burners. Does not work in most older non-computer DVD players. They were much cheaper to pay, and so became the more popular DVD for computer usage. Today, the price for both is within pennies of each other. Both DVD-R and DVD+R are "one time usage" disk like CD-R. They also make a DVD+RW which can be formatted and used like a CD-RW - they are ReWritable.

CDR means it is a compact disk read drive. Defination, it'll be able to view what is on the cd. CDRW is compact disk read write, which means not only can you view what is on a disk, if you have a disk that says CDRW you can also save data to the disk.

The plus means in "addition" to being a compact disk drive, it's a writable drive. A regular cd drive is always understood to be a read drive, but they do put that on some of them now, like the CD-R.

It would have been a longer abbreviation if they had done CDR+RW

Cd+RW means rewritable, the other is not rewritable, meaning you can't edit a Cd-R

I just bought CD-R discs to burn, but my laptop doesn't recognize them. When I try to format them, I get a write-protected message. My computer registers a DVD player and plays DVD's just fine, but it won't play, recognize, burn or format ANY CD's, including CD-R. I've tried using the lens-cleaner disc, to no avail. HELP!!!! pweeze??

THE "+" STANDS FOR THE OVERBURNING CAPABILITY OF THE MEDIA. A CD+R CAN BE BURNT A LITTLE MORE THAN THAT OF A CD-R.
IT DOEST HAPPEN AUTOMATICALLY YOU WILL HAVE TO OVERBURN THE DISK.
