There are small dogs that do not shed
the kind that their hair /fur never stops growing
so you need to have their hair/fur cut
depending on the dog every 3 to 6 months
these dogs do not go through a shedding period but they still do lose hair just like we do
if they have a good diet they will lose less hair
these dogs are
Yorkshire terrier
Yorkie poo (Yorkshire and poodle cross)
there are a bunch of others
the pure breeds are more $$ and they tend to have more health problems
mini Dachshunds (hot dogs) are great while they do shed (kind of) if you brush them daily they do not get their hair every where they do not have much and it is short.
and another plus you do not have to get their hair cut.
their back is more fragile than other dogs because it is longer
what ever dog you do decide to get take him to the vet's the same day and get a full work up. Some times even though they seem healthy they have hidden problems and if you catch them within the first three days they will take him back. This is better than having a very sick animal.
There is a great web site that can help you decide on what dog to get and what breeds have what health problems and how to care for each breed

Get a short hair dog, and research the breeds you like.
You can google search for breed traits for the dog breeds you like and ask at those websites how high a risk of shedding this breed has.

Silky Terriers are low shed. Do a google search for low shed dogs.
Every dog sheds-contrary to popular beliefs. However there are breeds that are low shed.
Good luck I hope you find a great dog. Check shelters...DONT SHOP ADOPT!

Try a miniature Schnauzer or a Jack Russell (lots of energy on that last one so be sure you have time to exercise and interact with it)
