I had a biopsy done yesterday on this lump I have on the side of my nose and am waiting for the results. The doctor said if it's positive, I will have to have the area surgicially removed. It is a painful process? Will I get black eyes? Do they put you to sleep or do they give you a local (novocain)? Thanks for your answers.

You should probably have MOHS surgery to remove the skin cancer if that is what it turns out to be. MOHS surgery is a process where they remove the least amount of tissue possible so you get a better cosmetic result and they examine the tissue while you are having the surgery so when you leave you know the skin cancer has been completely removed. It can be a long process depending on the extent of the cancer. It is usually just done with local anesthetic. You may have some bruising or swelling around the area as well.

The doctor said :If it is positive: First be glad it is being tested. 2nd. Dont worry too much until you get the result. It might need removing even if it is not Melanoma. Should it be melanoma (I had it on my nose 20 years ago) they removed it. Allowed nose to normally heal, then in 1 year I had a pedetal flap, (pulling part of the cheek overthe nose) and allowing that skin to grow, then severing the skin connection and all has been well since then.Must go for checkups every 6 months. Could have been very bad (in sinus cavitys) .

Any surgery is potentially painful, and whether or not they use a local or a general anesthetic depends on how much tissue the doctor feels must be removed. Be prepared, if it is a cancer, they must also remove alot of healthy tissue around the tumor as well so you could lose a considerable amount of your nose and require reconstructive surgery later. This doesn't always happen, but it can so you should be prepared for this.
