well i'm catholic and I didnt have a problem with
the movie but.. people get offended becasue they feel like our religion is constantly being made fun of and being misinterpurted..
It does get annoying sometimes because what ends up happening is that our religion is completely misrepresented, people take this seriously and then we as a community are stereotyped into something we arent. And then we get bashed for these ridiculous things.
it really isn't that different than making a racial slur....even if its in a funny contex...at a certain point it gets to be too much .
I have no problem with real Atheists, and they dont get offended because they have their own set of morals that are private and can't get ripped apart..they have completely private and personal morals that no one can judge. So who can poke fun at them???

Religion is a bubble, Reality must be kept in check as to not burst it, otherwise people will stop believing and the churches will have to resort to it's gangster ways of the past in order to gain money and power. See The Inquisition and the Dark Ages for details.

The Catholic newspaper has a different movie every week that they dislike. Most of the time, they tell the flock not to go see the film in question.

Because it's a comedy with the main focus around their religion, but I have to actually agree with them, for a change.
Can you imagine the outcry if there was a comedy based on Islam? The extremist Islamists would be bombing theaters all over the world.

I think they were upset that someone not only made fun of religion, but that they were right. It's my favorite movie, and my friend (who is a devout catholic) agreed with me. He believes a person must question aspects of their beliefs in order to fully undersatnd them.
Besides, I think Kevin Smith (director and actor) was right. No religion has got it right yet.

It posed a lot of questions about Jesus, made a mockery out of the Catholic church (i.e. the character Cardinal Glick and the Buddy Christ campaign) and they didn't like that

Because they were poking fun at what is considered a very solemn and serous religion. I think they may have also been offended by the fact that God was played by a woman.

Wow, did they? I am a Chistian, and I loved this movie! Thanks for reminding me about it. I think I'll go rent it again. It was hysterical.
